does it ever get better?

I'm 20 years old and I started college this year. In the last few months, I feel like my dysthymia has gotten worse. I thought it was just stress from work and the end-of-year holidays, but even after getting into the college I wanted and good things happening since then, I still feel depressed. My depression is "mild" but long-lasting, and it's not something I can share with my family because it seems like I don't have depression since I continue to "function," but I spent a good part of my adolescence until now wishing many times that I wasn't here, planning to attempt, and sometimes I really wish I had succeeded... But I always had to hide it because I didn't want my parents to have another depressed child, so I hide my depression from them. I've been seeing a psychologist for a few months, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

It's been difficult pretending that I'm okay, that I'm happy. I had to quit my job because of the university schedule and I feel guilty about that too. Because I need to be perfect, I need to be the daughter who graduates from college, I need to manage everything. But it feels like I'm a fraud, like I'm wearing a mask of happiness, but I'm not okay.

I feel that if things continue like this, I don't know how long I'll survive.

Hey. I'm sorry you're going through a lot. Sounds like you've been carrying a lot weight, that must have been exhausting.

I can understand it feels like a burden to share your depression to your family, but you are not.

You've been giving your best, you've been trying to hold everything together on your own. And that's strong.

But you're still only human, and we humans get tired. We get drain. And we don't have unlimited energy.

And that's completely okay and normal, that's nothing to be ashmed of.

Be gentle with yourself, yeah? You've been doing amazing, you've been doing your best. So give yourself time to rest.

Things do get better.

Oh… so much to carry… I wish for a moment of safety and softness for you. I remember living out of responsibility only.

Since, you mentioned a therapist: Do you have any idea of what they recommend and how didn’t it help yet?

@modestVillage5726 I have dysmythia too! I've had depression for a few years now as well as anxiety. I completely understand the feeling you're having with this. I ask myself all the time if it gets better and if its all worth it. But the thing is, you have to wait and see. If you don't, if you decide its not worth the wait, then there's no chance at all it can get better. and it only gets worse for everyone around you. we cant give up hope
