work depression
Hi, I'm new to seven cups, my wife recommended I try this before jumping into therapy. I've been struggling with work depression or at least that's what I think it is. Work has been straining on my mental health and it gets to a point where i have break downs and I have to step outside to cry. I work retail and it's been rough recently for me to get out of bed to go in. I always dread going in and it such draining work that it ruins my days off sometimes. Any advice would help.

Hello. I am sorry that any response from us at 7 Cups took so long. It is sad to hear about the difficulties you must have been going through in a toxic job environment.
From my experience customers in the retail business nowadays often forget that we, the workers, are humans, too, we are not built of stone, we have our families, personal problems sometimes and usually mediocre salaries.
But, thankfully, not all people behave like that. I've had customers saying they were sorry about the difficult situation I was in, being forced to tactfully react to their anger, grateful for our help and patience or just nice and valuable people to talk to.
I've decided to change my job a few months ago. In my old job I was expected to lie or manipulate customers, I was mobbed, attacked and continuously underappreciated. There were days when I struggled to get back my faith in humanity after my working hours.
I guess I know how you may feel...
Maybe it is too early to ask that question, but have you ever considered changing a job? Sometimes even a different branch, different kind of a product and customers, different (more supportive) bosses and co-workers can make a big difference.
Congratulations on naming the problem and starting your path to feeling better! 👍
Hello, @Tinybones
I've worked in different fields of retail in the past. Both rude or unreasonable customers and colleagues had both contributed to my depression and mental health issues. With the customers, I could report it to my Department Manager, but as for the colleagues. My boss back then, favored employees, so, it's difficult to report their lack of productivity and efficiency.
With your work depression, is it the customers, colleagues, or your own tasks that is contributing to your mental health? If it's customers, are you able to talk to a Manager/Supervisor about the issues? How long have you been working with this employer? Is there a chance to look for a job with another company?
Our mental health is so important, especially when work is the main cause. Are you able to take some time off to recharge yourself? Of the retail companies I've worked for, none of them really offered much mental support, so, it was either I'd bulldoze through the day, or I get a new job.
I hope you can find some balance.
