50 years.

Probably longer. Ever since I was child abused by insane parents and realized what depression was.
I had so much intelligence and potential and they ruined my life beyond repair.

@peachLychee9059 You don't know me.
Therefore you are unqualified to make optimistic statements like that without knkowing any of my history..

@Positron2 okay she doesn't know you but she was trying to give you some hope and optimism doesn't add anything bad to anybody. Why did that make you so upset?

@StrivingSoul Why did that make you so upset?

Because after 57 years of depression and 23 years of medication and therapy I have little patience for people trying to help with simplistic Psych 101 platitudes. I hate people telling me it will be okay and then blowing sunshine up my butt. It's not okay and it won't be ok, no matter how hard I work on my issues.

I need a team of Austrian Ph.D. psychologists working around the clock in a research lab and even they won't be able figure out how to help me.

I'm not sure exactly when my depression came about. I started self-harming around seventh grade, but I never attended therapy until college due to a lack of access. I was prescribed antidepressants during my senior year of high school, but I knew something was off far before then. I don't remember getting my official diagnosis of major depressive disorder until just this past February or so, when I was trying to get cleared for a therapy animal and my LPC wrote a letter to my physician.

@Mlymztn

(hug)!

Hang on, Mlymztn. Even if the sorrow is as vast as an ocean and twice as deep, tread water and know that somewhere above you is light and sunshine and waves and dolphins, and you will find them again.
