Are antidepressants worth it?

Right now I don't know of they are. All week I've been talking myself out of bad ideas, but tonight I had to talk myself out of suicide. I'm okay now. I'm going back to my psychiatrist Monday, but right now I don't know if I can do this anymore. I honestly feel like in my head I have two streams of consciousness, like the bad ideas, and the rational thoughts. And once again the bad ideas almost ruined my relationship. My mental illness is making my relationship to my partner very toxic.

Hi @unfinewine! The answer to this question is different for everyone. For some people, antideppressants aren't the right choice. But for others they can be very helpful, either for the long-term or for a shorter period while they're struggling badly. Medication can literally save someone or give them their life back, but then for other people it doesn't do much good. It's really dependent on the indiviual and the situation, but I'm sure your psychiatrist will help you make the right choice for you based on where you are right now. I'm so sorry that you've been hurting like this lately and I think it's really good that you'll be seeing someone who can help tomorrow! I'm can't tell you how glad I am that you've been able to talk yourself out of these bad thoughts that you've been having--I'm really grateful for your strength and courage and for the fact that you're still here fighting today. If you are put on medication, I hope it's very helpful to you, and good luck with your appointment!

My experience with antidepressants has been that I don't feel them doing much. However, the people in my life know when I am not taking them. There was a bit of trial and error in finding the right ones for me. I'm not sure if I'm on the right ones now.
