Dangerous thoughts?
I don't know what to think. I went through some bad depression recently, but got through it. After doing well for a while, I can tell I've gotten into a mild slump...but what's weird is that recently I've had some thoughts maybe I should be worried about? I'm not suicidal, I'm not even that bad, but - for example, I'll be holding a sharp knife and idly wonder what it would be like to slice my arm open. Or see an article on concussions and imagine getting a serious head injury. It's weird, I really don't have any negative feelings about it- not exactly positive, either. Just...nothing. Like casually wondering if I should brush my teeth first or wash my face. I have no interest or intention of acting on it, but...I don't really know what to think.
It's certain that imagining something doesn't make it happen. Otherwise people who write crime thrillers would find themselves committing crimes.
It seems to me that imagining harm to yourself is part of the process of reassuring yourself that you are safe. For example, in order to reassure yourself that you are safe from being flattened by a boulder falling from the sky, you have to imagine being flattened by a boulder falling from the sky as part of the train of thought. I'm not a psychologist, so I don't really know, but that's how I think of it.
Not knowing what to think about your thoughts is one of the things you can talk to listeners here about, and I hope you've been able to find listeners who understand and can help. If you'd like to chat with me about it, feel free to send me a message.
