Drug Abuse

Hi, my name is Sam. This is actually my first time on any sort of online chat, thread, or anything. I've been told these can be fairly helpful for anyone struggling with mental illnesses. Today has been a rough day, as are many days, and usually I am good at overcoming those. I'm feeling better at the given moment than I was earlier, but certainly still shooken up. I've been considering taking drugs and abusing drugs today to feel different than I do. I want to feel both an enhanced level of emotion and also a numbing deadness to the pain I've been feeling. I haven't taken anything yet, but I am certainly considering it. I also haven't been taking my medication consistentlyfor a couple weeks now, not exactly sure why. I'm scared about my desire to take drugs...mainly I am worried that I may get them in my hands and leave my life up to the chance of impulse which is always a scary place to be.

Responses are welcome, shared experiences are fine too, or if you just want to talk about related thoughts that is okay. I'm not sure if I am looking for advice or just "thoughts" on the topic. I definitely don't want someone telling me what to do. Best to you all though, I know it can be challenging.

Hi, Sam! And welcome to 7 cups :)

I understand why you are thinking about taking drugs, it seems like an easy way to escape, but believe me, it isn't. Drugs might help you escape in the beginning, but you'll get addicted to it, spend all your money to it and won't be able to let go of it. Even if you want to stop, you won't be able to. It will make you feel even worse than what you are going through now. You can find alternatives for drugs, there are a lot of healthy ways if you want to escape your problems for a moment :) You could draw, read, write, watch the sky, paint, cook, take a walk, go running, drive you bike, clean your room/house, watch a movie/serie, cuddle your pet/someone you love, take a bath...

Hope you are doing well!heart

I had problems with prescription narcotics/benzodiazipines (such as Valium or Xanax). It is not a joke. I started playing with those drugs when I was a senior in high school, got addicted, wasted half my paychecks buying those pills from people! I almost lost my husband because of my problem. I was doing those pills for almost ten years .. I wasted so much money and time. Pills are not the answer if you really don't need them. I wish you all the best. :)

Thank you all for sharing your stories. Addiction of any kind can be difficult to handle alone, so I'd like to invite you to connect with one of our many listeners for extra support.

Hey Sam!

Ive been in the same position as you, and it is very difficult.

I went through times where i felt so numb with how depressed i was feeling, i would go out and literally take anything. It wasnt until i nearly overdosed i realisedit was notthe best way to cope with my depression. I went on antidepressants for a while but things have become bad again.. and ive stopped taking my antidepressants and i have no idea why if im honest. So now im spiraling back into old safe and im actually scared of what to do. But knowing that i could have helped in some way gives me hope! I suggest having an early night or occupying yourself with a challenge or hobby as this helped me a lot when i was feeling like that.

Hope your okay :)

Amy, I am sorry that you feel as though you are spiraling back down. I understand how that must feel for you. I'm sure it can be kind of scary. I hope you find an opportunity to talk with a doctor or counselor about quitting your meds. I've been told quitting cold turkey makes for an extrenuously difficult experience.... You might even feel like you're getting a flu or cold... But also experience worsening depression. I understand whole-heartedly why you have had the impulse to stop. You wanna feel strong again. You think that you're better and want to be over with the past. You're fed up with needing help. Please remember that taking care of yourself requires some help and that it's still your decisions and your commitment that makes you better.... That you aren't relying on anyone or anything to heal. YOU are doing the work. YOU are healing.
