How effective is medication?

I've been struggling with depression for a really long time. I've tried pretty much everything, except long-term medication. I did try medication in the past, but I never did that for more than 2 months at a time. Honestly, I do believe medication can make you feel better. But how effective can they be for someone like me, who tried so many other things, but absolutely nothing made me get out of this depression?

@inventiveWest3210 I'm not an expert on this, but as far as I know medication can be very effective for some people who struggle with depression, but only when they find the right type of medication and the right dose. Finding the right type and the right dose is a matter of trial and error, so it can take a long time and be very frustrating.

There are several different types of medication for depression, and it's important to know that a different brand might not be a different type. For example, if you try one brand of SSRI and it doesn't get you out of the depression, then trying a different brand of SSRI might not be any good. You might need to try a completely different type, for example an SNRI or one of the others.

Therapy is a very effective alternative to medication for some people, but again there are different types of therapy and the only way to find the right one is trial and error. In the case of therapy it's even more difficult, because a description like "CBT" doesn't mean just one thing. One "CBT" therapist and another "CBT" therapist might have a very different approaches, and there are other effective therapies that are not like any kind of CBT.

@RarelyCharlie

Totally agree

I've been through the struggle to find the right meds for me, and it's been frustrating at best and sickening at worst. But I have a really patient and kind doctor that helped me with it.

Also meds are oftentimes not for forever, they're a solution that can reduce your symptoms fast and effectively, but it doesn't solve problems you might have, like difficulty regulating emotions or a negative self image. Therapy can help you get a handle on this. But therapy is a long term commitment that can be frustrating and maddening at times as well.

Bottom line is; there is no one cure all solution for depression, but there're educated experts that can guide you to the right solution for you

Hope this helps you even a little and gives you some hope you can overcome this challenge 🙂
