I just turned 18 and finished high school and everyone else seems so happy about it but I don't know how to feel happy too.. I'm gonnaleave my parents' house in a few months since the college I'll attend is far away and I'm upset about leaving my mom, my sister, my grandpa, etc. I feel safe here, I'm terrified, also because I know this means becoming an adult and nothing will ever be the same and everyone says things like "growing up is awful" and "growing up is all stress and responsabilities and being on your own", etc, etc.sad I think I'm having that black and white thinking I used to have when I used to see a therapist... I'm just so scared and sad Help pleasefrown

Hi Dunn! First off, congrats on finishing high school and getting into college! That is a great accomplishment :)

I understand that this transition between high school and college can be a scary time, because you moving away from a familiar and supportive environment. But, this also means that you?ll have the chance to build these environments elsewhere, along with others with the same interests (and probably the same fears about the future!)

And as a young adult myself? it?s really not so bad at all:) I believe you have all you need to develop the responsibilities of being an adult, especially being surrounded by peers/friends who are going through the same transition, and remember thatit is okay to make mistakes! It could also helpto identify adult role models and to ask questions and learn about their experiences. It?s okay to seek support, and there are a lot of support groups and clubs you can join in college that will help you begin this journey. One thing that personally helps me keep moving forward is an active belief that our best days lie ahead - if we choose to make it that way. What are some of the things you are looking forward to, that are worth feeling temporarily uncomfortable for?

If you?d like, we can also set up a time to do a live chat - you are more than welcome to send me a message to set up a time to talk :)
