My brother needs help.
hi, this not technicially for me, but i also need help. i believe my brother has depression and i feel it has gotten worst. at this point he doesnt want to talk to me due to lack of communication. nor he doesnt talk to really anyone else. what adivce i need is to help him feel more motivated in life and self encourage him to become more confident with himself and allow him to be more active with his life. i know in depression, its more the person has to be the one to make things happen. but as a brother/supporter what can i do to help him or support to help himself. right now hes mad at me, so im gonna give him space and wait a bit. but please if any of you guys have any sort of advice for me that wouild be greatly appreciated. thanks
I'm sorry to hear the position you are facing. It is good that you had notice that your brother is in depression and also you want to give him support. My advice is to try during the conversation not to blame him, just try to understand him, and stimulate him to talk, with you since you are his brother and i guess he can share with you specific situations in his life. A good point is also if ypou can you start talking with him, I would say you to start openning some your situation, and start evoking interest for conversation. In that case you both will gain mutual trust. I hope this post will help you somehow.
@Villz Hello, love
I know depression get the best of one person, im struggling with it too for a long time now and i also tented to get mad all the time and get annoyed by everything ,I lost interest in eeeverything I used to like. and then you distance yourself from everybody. maybe something happend, a brakeup or i dont know, but maybe something triggered this, probably it did
I really hope this helps, but this is what worked on me: I changed the environment. even if it was just the room i was sleeping in or going to a different park, it really helped me to just relax a little bit. Do not make him feel like theres something wrong with him or you're doing things just for that reason, because i know that fucks you up even more. it has to be settle, little things, little steps. Let him know that he is not alone and you'll always be there for him no metter what. and dont make the situation even more sad, he seems a bit overwelmed by everything. He needs to relax and just put his thoughts at ease and find motivation again by meeting new people, maybe there are some toxic people in his life. whats his favourite thing in the world? or favourie sport? invite him to just do things with you, take him out, i know your room can sometimes be the ,most depressing places of all. its really hard trying to help someone with this, im not giving you much advice i know, but im talking from thye precpective of someone who has problems like that, and i kknow very little things may trigger it
Best wishes <3
@Villz In order to help someone you have to make sure they are willing to help themselves out, when someone is often depressed they feel like they become a burden on people who are supporting/being there for them. One thing you can do is suggest to your brother is to give 7 Cups a try. Maybe he will have better luck opening up with someone he doesn't know compared to someone that he feels could judge him on a personal level, he is your brother and he probably loves you a lot. Chances are he won't be mad at you for long. Best of luck!
Thanks for the replies everyone! And thanks for taking the time read what's on my mind. I wish I could reach out to him. It's been 4 days now that he stopped acknowledging me. He said a lot of harsh words through Facebook message (cause he's not the one to confront) so I dunno how long he's going to stay mad at me. He actually was mad for something little. Apparently I took too long to get ready. (30 mins). I've started working graveyards and it's harder for me to get up earlier than before to hang out. So usually I try to hang out with him around 5pm? He always kept saying "it's too late" and from the tone of his voice he sounded disappointed or forget it kind of deal. So since that incident he just stopped talking to me and everytime I see him in the kitchen or hallway I'd say hi or hey, but just ignores and has a really pissed off face. I try not to say a lot or force him to talk to me cause I feel it will make the situation worst. When we were talking, I felt like I was the only one he was comfortable with. He stopped talking to his friends, stopped talking to my mom. And now me. So it worries me that he has no one to talk to. And he usually stays in his room. He plays online games on his laptop t
Like I know it's his depression that's doing most of this. And it's hard to convince him to talk to new people or seek therapy help etc... What do you guys think I should do? Just let him space out and give him more time to cool off?
@Villz Hi, again. I know it is bad feelings if you want to help to your brother, but he refused it. The goood thing is that you are aware about the situation and you are willing to help. If I were on your place I would try to let him lnow that Im here for him whenever he needs to talk, and after that leave him a space. I hope that you will overcome situation soon, but also you have to know that it needs time.
@nlpinspiration
thanks again for the reply. I am continuing to give him space. He's still not talking to me. But I guess it takes more time than others for him to lower his guard down. For someone I know who has a lot of pride and hold grudges for people he's mad at. It's gonna be a while I guess. But I will continue to be supportive even if I'm not talking or showing him any.
