My son and I.
So I have depression. Am on medication for it. It's mostly controlled I guess. I still have issues. But I'm posting today more about my son.
He's 9. I think he may be suffering. I say this because he always thinks he is sad. That he has a bad life. That since our dog died 3 years ago his life has been crappy. We moved. I got a divorce. He has no friends. He does have ADHD as well so I'm not sure if it's part of it. I have talked to his doc and he is seeing a counselor on Wednesday. But I have no idea what to do to help him.
Do i talk to him about me? I mean he won't really talk to me. Other than to say his life isn't happy. And it makes me so sad. I feel like I'm failing as a mom. Which of course makes my depression so much worse.
Any ideas you all can give me would be great.
So I thought I'd post an update. Sorta. His doc said it might be good to talk to someone. And I got a call an hour later to set up an appointment. It's Wednesday. I also talked to him last night a little about it. Thought I should before we get there and he freaks out. I explained he's done nothing wrong but that I think he needs a little help learning how to deal with things. And that his sister who has a touch of anxiety saw someone to help her and that I have been in the past as well. I tried. It to use words like depression but then decided I should. I don't want the doc to say it and he think it's bad or something.
I hope I did the right thing by telling him. He's my little boy and I worry so much about him.
@gardenlady
I think you did right. Now you just need to stay close to your family and help them (and yourself) to get better.
Best wishes <3
@gardenladyIt sounds like you are doing all the right things. I'm sure it's really heartbreaking to see your son suffer from depression. It must just feed into guilt and self-criticism. But, I think it's great that you were able to think on your feet and realize that at least getting a consulation from a professional would be useful. I hope that he can learn to open up about his sadness in therapy and that he will stick with it. It sounds like he's had a lot of losses at such a young age: 1) friends from moving 2) pet dying 3) loss of intact family. I agree with someone who said that it's important to let him know that he's not alone, that people feel these awful, difficult feelings and that it's possible to feel better. Maybe he has to go through some kind of mourning about the various losses he's sustained. I'm guessing that he probably has a sensitive temperament. Anyway, I wish you and your family the best. I know that I would be really really sad to see my child going through depression. Hang in there.
UPDATE!!!!
We had our appointment today. He did pretty well. No crying from either of us. She seems nice.
He was a little reserved I think though as he seemed to give a lot of one word replies or not really or sorta as well. Not that that is bad just he wasn't very talkative.
She asked us both questions. Let him answer and then asked if I agreed. Sometimes I did others I didn't. She let me explain why I didn't agree and he usually said yeah that's true. So that's good. I wasn't seeing things.
Thank you all so much for your comments and thoughts. He agreed to see her again in 2 weeks. Fingers crossed it goes well.
Oh and she did say he does have a bit of depression. But also called it Adjustment disorder with depressive mood.
@gardenlady
See? He will be better very soon. Don't worry too much ;)
Keep your family together, feed it with love and every thing will be all right!
