Was being medicated a mistake?

June 23rd, 2020

Since I was around twelve/thirteen years old I remember starting my first medicine for ADHD and a few months later the first medicine for my depression.

I fully believe that being medicated was the worst choice and that I suffered horrifically from it, and that if my school had just accommodated for my ADHD I wouldn't be in the position I was today.

Today I am only taking anti depressants, a stimulant to keep me awake during the day, a blood sugar medicine and a beta blocker for my heart rate. I still feel horrifically overmedicated but I notice obvious results when I don't take my Cymbalta– coming off of it was absolute hell and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. It was so bad I had to continue to take it to make the side effects stop.

I don't know how to bring this up to my psychologist or my therapist because I don't know if they'll take me seriously. Does anyone else feel similarly or have had a similar experience to mine?

P.S. I know medications are helpful and necessary to some people. I'm not pill shaming! I just don't think being medicated worked well for me.

@LittleSoftHeart I am not an expert, but I've read that medication for ADHD is controversial and might not always be best for everyone.

I've also read that coming off Cymbalta is difficult. If you search the Internet for Cymbalta withdrawal and Cymbalta taper you can find a lot of information about how to do it. And taking medication that makes you sleepy together with a stimulant to keep you awake seems like a puzzling combination.

I imagine any psychologist or therapist will be well aware of the issues and the controversy around these medications, and will be prepared to take you seriously and discuss the options. If they're not, or they don't have sufficient experience of medication withdrawal, they should be able to refer you to appropriately experienced professionals who can help you to achieve what you want.

Unless you're being medicated under something like a court order, you are ultimately in charge of the treatment you receive.

If you'd ever like to discuss these issues, or anything else, feel free to click on my profile picture and message me.

I can agree being medicated works well when you have the right combination of cocktail pills but me 5!times a day one shot a week 19 different pills each one for something different and then add all the side effects then pills to stop some of the side effect all the blurred vision I have not sleeping for one example my dr told me to take 3 0.5mg clonazepam tonight to see if it would help me sleep I’ve had 11 hr of sleep past 4 days tonight included until I could pick up my new prescription later today but I wish he would have taken me off one of the benzodiazepine pills not just added another one so now I’m going to be on a diabetic pill 2x a day and shot once a week water pill 2x a day potassium 2x a day a vitamin called l methlyfolate comes from b vitamins which my diabetic pill wipes my body out from forming naturally Prozac clonazepam 2 x a day Ativan at bed time prazosin 2 at bedtime buspar 2x a day 2 topiramate 2 inhalers as needed fast acting long acting omeprazole muscle relaxant 2 of those at bed time gabapinten 3 x a day Benadryl 2 2x a day it takes a small army to Sudate me at bed time and I have to watch it close at night my bedtime pills every one of them except for I think one lower bp so I have to make sure it don’t go too low before I go to sleep I hate the nessaciary evils of this medication game
