Anyone here experience the "what's the point?" episodes?

OK, so here is what I mean by "what's the point?" episode. I two examples but this happens at least once a day.

1. I was planning a backpacking trip with a close friend and was excitedly trying to figure out which trail to hike when all of a sudden a very strong feeling of hopelessness and futility came over me and I said to myself, "oh, f_ck it!" and closed the browser. Somehow, I went from looking forward to a hiking trip and having fun choosing a trail to my entire being feeling that it's all pointless.

2. I get this when writing emails or responses to forum posts. I write a few sentences and when I'm forced to struggle just a little to find the right words, I have a strong and sudden urge to just give up and give in to the futility of it all.

3. On thursday I make plans to visit friends, on Friday I'm kicking myself for the decision and thinking all day at work about which excuse I can use to get out of it. Once the excuse has been explained to my friend, I retreat to my cave and wallow in feelings of self-hate and disgust.

So, I guess the general trend here is a sudden change in mood, mentality etc. that causes one to lose hope, self-destruct and retreat to solitude, self-pit and self-loathing.

I can without a doubt, relate to this. I've been suffering from depression and anxiety for a long time. I'm constantly in the middle of doing something but I'll get disheartened and mid way through I'm like, "Why do I even bother?" And I just give up. For example: I had planned to go out tomorrow, nothing fancy, but going out, getting a bit of fresh air. I was told the more I get out the better I would feel, so I ordered myself a non expensive little dress, and when it arrives this morning I did like anyone does, I tried it on, I thought originally it was beautiful and I couldn't wait to go out and wear it. But after a while I then doubt sinks in and I'm thinking "Do I look okay?" Then I'm starting to feel uncomfortable, that I'm fat. Thanks to this I gave my excuse that I wasn't feeling good and my supposed day out was ruined by doubt! It's not just this, but I'll doing something like trying to get back to my story I've been writing (I'm a freelance writer) and I'll get half way down the page and I'll suddenly be like "What's the point? I'm not going to get anywhere!" And then delete half an hours work and regret it straight away. Even the simplest things like doing my hair in a certain style, if something goes wrong I just won't bother continuing it. Even on here I've tried writing out a post to explain how I feel and then suddenly think "Why would anyone want to know your self pitying dribble?" And just back out. I wish so much that this would stop, that this lack of confidence wasn't so overwhelming.

Definitely. My summer exercise is biking but getting started is the real chore. On a bad day recently I got all ready, had taken the bike out of the garage, got on it for about 3 seconds and then just gave up. Went back in the house...

I also recognized this as a depression symptom... and I was going to just curl up and sleep, but I made myself contact a couple listeners first. One was online and we talked for a few minutes and that generated just enough momentum to get me out the door again.

Is this feelin mostly seen in depressed people, because I get it more and more of the time, lately?

I would think so. A happy/healthy brain seeks out social interaction, activities and even challenges that one would face in the workplace. People with unhappy brains isolate themselves and challenges at work or at home become insurmountable obstacles that are impossible to overcome.

I think I'm probably depressed then. I'm becoming increasingly like that, and it's a vicious circle.. The house gets in a mess to the point where I can't drum upeenough motivation to clean it, which then makes me feel awful, so I can't be bothered to pick things up, then there's clutter. And really, is it all worth it?

I don't know but I feel like whenever I try, things just go to hell. So, i'm beginng to think what's the point. Why try? People are going to hate me anyway. All the weight I lost , I'm starting think- whatever I'll just eat anything I want. I feel like no one cares whether i'm anorexic or huge, even though they bullied me when I was overweight. I just don't care anymore, because the man I long for doesn't either obviously. People underestimate my intelligence due to my social anxiety, so I have a hard time communicating properly, therefore have no friends. I'm feeling so "done" right now. Therefore, yes I get the feeling entirely. Sorry for the negativety.

I understand and completely relate to what your talking about. I think it's important to remember that these negative thoughts are the product of an imbalanced brain and does not reflec

t reality.

I relate to this as I'm slightly experiencing it now. I have these so often.

I can relate to this, but it's more permanent for me. Like an edge where I stop holding onto everything. I avoid people and feel disgusted about everything.. a form of existential nihilism.

I experience this a lot. Currently, I'm feeling like this about my future. Like, what's the point in trying to have a successful semester of college when I'm not going to have a future. What's the point in talking to people when people just end up leaving me. Etc etc. Why bother trying anymore. It can be a dangerous mindset depending on the situation because you can really screw yourself over, such as my college example.

I can relate. I am borderline so I have lots of sudden mood changes. What makes it worse is when people get mad at me when I cancel plans

i cry and listen to a Capella music when I feel like nothing is worth it.

The core of my depression is that feeling. I totallt get it. I wonder what the point of life is on a daily... No, minute by minute basis. I have become very inactive and isolated due to this. I think it is affecting my physical health as well. I just gave up ya know.
