Besides medicine, what can help with my depression?

My friend is depressed, what can I do to help?

I try and get them out the house, I'm there to talk if they want to and they've gone to a doctor but I don't really know what else I can do but I want to be able to help. Being someone who has never been depressed I don't really get what it's like so it's hard to help using home remedies for depression .

Be there to listen.

Listening is great. But listening without being judgmental is a major key. Make sure you try your best to empathize with your friend. Let your friend know that you are always available to talk to.

The only consistent thing I've found that worked for me was cold showers. I mean like, ice-freaking-cold. :P

Usually I would do a warm/hot shower so I could wash myself and clean, but before I would turn it off, I would set the water temperature as cold I as could make it go. Apparently there is something about the shock that forces you to feel something - and that meant all the difference for me at the time. If my personal experience isn't enough, here is a link to an article about benefits of a cold shower. Here's the study about cold showers being a potential treatment for depression found in the article as well.
