I finally got the courage to speak to my family about my struggles, I went to my first appointment last weekend and I got diagnosed with depression and the doctor prescribed me Zoloft.
It shocked me when he diagnosed me; I was frozen in my chair and not saying a word. Even tho I saw it coming and suspected it for a very long time, but it was shocking news! I thought I would be happy to finally getting a diagnose, for finally knowing the reasons behind my suffering, but I am not, my condition even got worse and I feel like I am losing my mind. Even controlling my emotions and pretending I am okay is impossible.
Anyway, I try to accept it every day, that I have a mental illness, and I was going to the pharmacy so I can get my medication but then...... my family made me questioning everything.
They can’t accept the fact that I need to take medication to feel better, they believe in natural remedies, they also don’t believe that it is an illness, as they think it is just a down phase because of COVID and for not being able to get a job, they have mistaken it for sadness and I made my best to let them understand but I failed. Quoting my sister, “everyone has depression” — that line gave me an attack and I couldn't sleep because of the pain.
They don’t trust the doctor diagnose and they told me to not get the medication I wouldn’t listen to them usually but when it comes to taking a medication, it is a very sensitive topic to me because my mom passed away because some doctors misdiagnosed her with an organic illness, so they gave medications that made her develop a more serious organic illness and that led to death. So they are telling me that this will happen to me, and I am now thinking of running away from getting the help I need because I feel scared.
They even telling me I got worse after I visited the doctor, yes it is true, but it is because I am not faking and pretending that I am ok anymore, I removed my mask, and yes I got worse because I was not ready to hear that I suffer, so I am thinking about my future and too many things, but I believe It is a normal reaction and I am trying to calm myself down, but they making me feel otherwise and make my panic is higher than ever.
They are also telling me I am thinking about it too much and it is illusion, not depression. They don’t believe the doctor at all because he diagnosed me from the first time; they told me maybe I think of things that are not true; they are telling me this is a phase and my mind is overacting, everyone has problems but they are living, I need to tough up and get out more, be active more, work, etc, but that is the problem that made me open up and go to the doctors, I can’t do all of this because of the fatigue. They want me to travel to change my mood when even getting out of bed feels like exercise, so imagine how I am feeling right now.
I am very confused and scared; I didn’t get the medication, and I decided to go to another doctor for a second opinion, so they can believe me, and so I can be more sure. But I already feel drained, it was hard for me to even open up the first time, and I don't know if I can do it again, I want to shut down and communicate with no one.
They want to do brain scans so they can know if I am depressed; they want to see if I have low serotonin, and they think brain scans can prove that.
Is this even possible? And is it possible for all depression cases? Does anyone go/went through a similar scenario?
I am sorry for writing all of this before asking my question, but I had to let my thoughts out somewhere.
Thank you <3
@Selcouth96 I am not an expert, and you cannot get medical advice here at 7 Cups, but I'm pretty certain depression will not show up on a brain scan.
Also, the way serotonin works in the brain cannot be measured directly because it's just one part of a very complex system. Medications like Zoloft do not simply fix "low serotonin". They alter the balance of the system that serotonin is one part of.
If you're not happy about trying medication, another possible approach is to try therapy. Some people find that medication works best, and some people find that therapy works best. I think getting a second opinion from another doctor is a good idea, because you can discuss all the options. Maybe the doctor will have some ideas about how you can explain things to your family.
