How Do I Learn Not to Base My Happiness on the Mood of Those Around Me?
I am bipolar and I have a hard time just being level and balanced. I find that if people around me are happy and in a good mood, I am less likely to feel down and depressed...but if those around me are stressed, tense or anxious, I am much more likely to be depressed and anxious.
For example, if my husband has a bad day at work and is in a bad mood, I am automatically on the defense and in a depressed state. I find it hard to put forth what I'm really feeling, and instead, take on the mood of others.
How do I stay balanced and not let the mood of others affect me? Help!
Hi saraj0906 - thanks for reaching out. I am sorry you feel you are swayed by others moods. It is so difficult to not react to those around us, but it is possible.
For me staying grounded is a way to not react like a billiard ball to every emotion around me. That starts with a morning mindfulness session, exercise or yoga, a diet that is low in carbs with protein at every snack or meal (at least every 3 hours in smaller amounts spread over whole day). socializing, chores, and another mindfulness session right before sleeping.
You may find other things help you, but creating patterns and routines can be helpful.

Thanks for the thoughtful post to my thread. It makes so much sense. I'm really working on my reactions to peoples moods/feelings/words, etc. I tend to get very defensive and it makes situations (especially with my husband) very tenuous and, volatile at times.
I am trying to focus more on my physical health, as I haven't really been putting much effort into it lately. Also, I'm working on doing more activities that keep me occupied (reading, adult coloring for calm, listening to music, progressing on my 7Cups path...).
I know I'm a work in progress...and probably won't always think as clearly as I am in this moment, but I am definitely working to be more mindful. I would love a chat/session with you.
Thanks :)
@saraj0906 You sound like you are already making progress. That is wonderful. I too find physical activities focus my attention away from thoughts and worries. Yoga and stretching seem to revitalize me.
Glad to hear ou would like a 1-1 chat. Send me a message and let me know good times and we can set up a mutually convenient time or range.
