How can I tell someone I'm dealing with severe depression?

Hey everyone

I need some advice. I want to know how people that have dealt with depression how they let others like family or friends know what's going on. I've been struggling with depression for many years and this year has been the worst. My medication is no longer working, I am struggling to feel better and have really gone down hill these past few months. I've been slowly wanting more and more alone time to myself and no longer am hanging out with other friends. I have thought about doing things to myself sometimes...which is another reason why I want someone to talk to or call and I can trust if I ever do hit rock bottom.

I have a real good friend I am thinking about telling. He's literally the only one I can trust now. He is my cousin (more like my brother). He was there for me on the worst day of my life (when my best friend died) I hung out with tonight and he can make me laugh no matter how horrible I feel inside, which is why I love hanging out with him...however I always want to bring up the topic to him, but it never seems like a good time. Either his parents are home, we are laughing, or things like that and it never seems to come out. I know I'll probably end up tearing up telling him which is why I want no one around when I do so. I don't know if I should text him and ask if I could talk to him alone sometime or just blurt it out to him. I also am so worried that hes going to hate me if I bring it up to him (i think it's the anxiety that's getting to me).

Anyways, does anyone have any advice on what to do or tips with discussing it with people...I could really use some help with this. Thanks a ton. *hugs* means a lot.

Hi LightningHeart! I can understand you being anxious about telling people, I've felt the same way for a long time. What I eventually did was writing a note which I gave to my mother. That's one possibility. Another could be texting your friend. I do recommend you talk to him, it's great to have someone to fall back on. You shouldn't be worried about his reaction when you tell him, if he's your friend he will at least try to understand. Best of luck!

Hi I'm Rosie. I had the same problem too. And to be honest the best answer I can give you is to be completely open and up front about it. If they're really good friends they will make you feel comfortable and not as awkward as it would be with a stranger. You could even write them a letter expressing your feelings. I know that helps me.
