It is sometimes difficult to determine as everyone experiences it differently and present different symptoms. Difficulty sleeping can be a sign, but that could suggest a whole host of others problems, including anxiety or physical ailments. Weird thoughts may be a sign of anxiety, unless the thoughts are quite dark in nature.

Usually people get the feeling there is something wrong. They may feel low/grumpy/sad most days and for no particular reason. They start to lose interest in things they enjoy and have very negative thoughts about the world and themselves. Considering you may have depression is also a sign that you're realising something isn't quite right.

I'd recommend checking out 7 Cups' depression self help guide, it shares information on what depression feels like and what it is. It might be useful to you.

Being chronically stressed can cause changes in the brain which can induce depression and/or anxiety, so the stress may have triggered this. Hearing voices can be a sign of another mental health issue but it's something you don't have to deal with - there is treatment and help available. :) I would highly recommend visiting your doctor, there's nothing to be afraid of!

That isn't true at all. They will likely offer you medication and/or counselling. If you're suicidal, then you may be sent to a crisis team, but you're not locked away against your will! It's really nothing to worry about.
