How to help someone out of a depressed state?
My husband will get depressed and sleep for hours. He's been sleeping for 18 hours now. The door is locked. I've told him I love him, asked him to please unlock the door, told him that everything is going to be ok, asked him if he wants some of the fresh banana bread I just made... His only response has been "go away." I don't know what to do.
@BellaJune Sometimes the best thing you can do for a depressed person is love them and let them be. It doesn't mean he will want to be left alone forever, but it does sound like, at least for right now, he needs some space.
@BellaJune you sound like a loving and caring spouse. I'm sorry you're going through a diffcult time. The best you can do is love him and let him sleep as long as he needs to rest. Depression can also make us irritable and moody so try not to take it personally. I know that's easier said than done. Part of the recovery for me was sleeping long hours so I can relate. He needs you now more than ever so try to have a relaxed approach because if you're stressed it can sometimes affect him too. Marriage is for better or worse so it takes a lot of patience and tolerance. When I was depressed I was a bit more considerate towards my spouse and caregivers so I never locked the door and never told them to go away but there again everyone handles depression differently. Try to stay objective and hopeful even when it appears that his not feeling well.
Best wishes!
