Misdiagnosis?

So I've started seeing the social worker my school employs and after about 4 meetings she diagnosed me with adjustment disorder (school being the trigger) with anxious and depressed symptoms. I've had anxiety my whole life, so it seems like a normal part of my day. But the past year or so I've been more focused on my depression. I think therapy will greatly help my anxiety, but I don't think some simple positive thinking sessions will help my depression, it's not just a part of daily life, it consumes my life at this point. School is not the cause of my problems, it just worsens and triggers them. The lsw lady has not focused at all on my depression. I've now started bingeing and restricting as another form of self harm, I'm always exhausted from poor sleep and just in general, I can't focus, I'm sad most days for most of the day, ect. The lady seems to think that you have to be failing school and not getting out of bed in the morning to have major depression. She doesn't understand that my parents won't put up with that, and make me get out of bed even when I really really want to just stay there and sleep. I've lost interest in many things, which makes me even more sad. I have the expectation of top notch grades, so I can't fail school, but my school performance has certainly decreased and it's a big effort for me to do anything let alone homework. I just feel really conflicted, and j don't know what to do. I want to get back to the way I used to be.

I'm so sorry you've been going through such a rough time. You sound like you are particularly in a lot of distress and nobody deserves to feel the way you feel. I want to first commend you in recognizing and taking steps to make things better. We are here for you and will always support you no matter what. Is there any other social working you can see or therapist? She may not be the right one for you, especially if she is dismissing how you feel. Depression is a serious condition and it is notorious for consuming lives, following you everywhere and surfacing out of nowhere. I will be crossing my fingers for you and hope you know there are people here who are willing to catch you if you fall.

@potatofriend thank you so much. Unfortunately, my parents didn't believe me the first time I asked for help so they have not been a part of my therapy. They don't even know about it, because I see the social worker during school. Since she works for a company, there are many other employees there trained in different fields but it's near impossible for me to find the one and means of getting there. I'm hoping that I can emphasize how bad I'm feeling in our next few sessions and then maybe she'll finally focus on the depression aspect. My only issue is that sometimes it's hard for me to tell anyone how bad it gets because when I don't feel like collapsing and crying I assume I'm not feeling depressed even though that sadness and numbness is still there

@ChristmasTreesInTheMoonlight

Please let me know if your social worker changes her approach. Is there a way to contact the company explaining your situation and receiving recommendations? I understand what you mean about not feeling like it's an issue when you aren't feeling depressed, but it will come back to bite you if you don't mention it.

@potatofriend She works for an organization, I might be able to contact them. Today my mom found out about this app and I think she's starting to understand what I'm going through a little bit, so it's possible I could get therapy elsewhere. I was just a bit disappointed because I've waited so long to get help and now I have a diagnosis that I feel is downplaying my problems. But the social worker says I'll "control" the sessions from now on, so I think I'll start pushing the depression issue since it's the most severe right now. Thanks for your suggestions
