The Depression Dictionary

Hello, everyone!

Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses - indeed, when describing 'mental illnesses' one of the first words that come to the minds of most people is 'depression'. What is depression, though, may not come as readily to some - to some people, depression is any fleeting moment of sadness, or any prolonged period of pain. Google calls depression 'feelings of severe despondency or dejection', but all the online dictionaries have different definitions.

In much that same vein, what do you think? What do 'depression', 'sadness', 'pain', 'mental illness' and 'mental health' mean to you?

"Every time you ask I pretend I'm okay"

To that thug who murdered two women the other day.

Be aware of the world of the now. Be aware of what makes people unhappy.

Never announce that there is a different reason of unhappiness than criminality and crimes around a moral person.

That sounds like possible things to do if you've been discriminated against in the past for speaking out about your emotions to me! Thank you for sharing.

Depression also feels like being permanently drunk. Out of focus, glazed over, not fully present.

Depression can make things hard and it's hard to sleep sometimes too! It sounds like you want to be part of a community but it's hard for you, and it sounds like you have to pretend to be okay and you feel unaccepted. I'm sorry to hear that, it sounds like it's hard for you!

Sleeping can be made tough with depression and it can definitely make us irritable! Ooh, also, it can make us feel like we're alone even though we're in crowds. It sounds like you also struggle with panic attacks and anxiety, I'm sorry to hear things are so tough for you!

Hello, Kind People Here On 7 Cups,

Today, my post will be about betrayal from a friend. Take my word: it can be really painful.

Me and my friend Kacidy, we were friends since 1st Grade. We spent all of our days together. First at her house, then we went to school. In the same class! And after school, we did our homework together. We were so close, that sometimes, I thought we were the same person! It went on until we went to middle school. Obviously together. At the beginning of 7th Grade, I realized that I wasn't being who I was anymore. I was acting more depressed, sensitive, and no one seemed to care! Not even Kacidy noticed. I felt myself far away from happiness. I wasn't super happy, or successful. Just an average girl with anxiety. Some things changed. Kacidy started to have her own circle of friends. Where I was not included. I felt that she was becoming more distant and careless. Because she was trying to keep some balance between me and her friends, and she didn't want to offend me. Then one day, the system boiled down to her choosing. We were at the movies together and her new friend was there, too. I couldn't imagine the movie without my friend: and by saying, that she was kinda part of my family. But when I tried to talk to her, she ignored me. When the movie began to start, my friend asked me what was wrong. I couldn't tell her, she may not understand! Then, Kacidy said to me, "Sorry Morgan. But would you mind if I'd missed this one? My other friend is right here next to me and we barely talk. We'll be hanging out tomorrow at lunch, maybe you can meet me there!" Well, all of her other friends were invited. So I was excluded. It was a heavy blow. I felt lonely for the first time in my life. Needless to say, my friend gladly dedicated more time to her new friends. Until the point where we barely spoke a kind word to each other in a whole week! It was the ultimate breakdown. I had tried to talk to her and try to tell her how I feel. How much I wanted her to be my friend again. I was hoping we could patch things up! But, i didnt work. Have emailed her so many times and she never responded. I tried to hang out with her, but she locks me out of her room and talks and laughs with my sister. Since Kacidy and I were barely friends anymore, I never had any other close friends I could stick to. So for months, I cried alone. Walked alone. Even had my lunch alone. I didnt know what to do. I know that you're gonna say that she isnt a real friend and that I should make new ones, but there are no other friends that I have. People at my school tease me constantly. I have never met one person in my life besides Kacidy that was so nice to me, and it would be very hard to let her go. As much as she is ignoring me, she did hug me when I cried. I really dont know what to do.

Gosh, that sounds so tough! I can see that you used to be close with a friend of yours but you've since drifted apart and it's tough for you because she was the only friend you had. Is it possible for you to make any other friends, and do you think that'd be a possibility you'd like to explore?

Depression to me is making the same bad choices and living with the consequences. Ive made too many mistakes and now Im suffering. I dont know how much more I can take.

I know suicide isnt an option but Im at the end of my rope.

Bad choices can definitely make things super tough, and I'm sorry to hear that you think you're struggling as a result of your mishaps. I can see that you think you're at your limit and I don't blame you, it sounds like things are hard for you! How long has this been going on?

Depression to me is like falling. There's no bottom, you just keep falling, your stomach hurts, you close your eyes because you don't want to see anything, you don't want to hear anything. You need to be alone yet want someone to hold you. You're empty and yet full of crippling pain, your numb yet overly sensitized to every sensation.

That sounds so difficult because it sounds really contradicting! I think I get what you mean though, there's no clear definition and it's such a struggle because opposing forces are pulling at you. I'm sorry to hear that it's so tough for you <3
