What does depression feel like?
Recently a person told me : "I don't understand depression. I mean it's more of just attention seeking ." So depression can mean many things to different people. Many people have their own definition or way of explanation.
Depression is like that friend who says that loves you, but is truly tearing you to bits.
Every thought you have is twisted into self hate until youre doubting everything you thought you knew, and you wish someone would grab you and pull you away and tell you that everything theyre saying isnt true...
But no one notices the sadness in your eyes, the way you distance yourself more, they just dont get it.
like a black hole u stick at it .
It feels like I
I've always compared my depression to soggy cereal. Like a bowl of cereal you poured days ago and forgot to clean up, so now it's more a bland mush with questionable milk. And it's the only food I have, so I eat it, and I go through my day only sustaining myself with this soggy cereal, and I hate it. its the only food I've ever had, yet I'm still starving, and I don't want to eat. And I hate myself for never being able to get different food at the store, or at the least not letting my cereal get soggy and bland. Sometimes I'll just eat it and ignore how boring it is, and sometimes when I stop eating I'll miss it. But usually, I'm sitting there questioning why it's there and where it came from. I've tried throwing it away, ignoring it, running from it, yet it's still somehow always on my counter if not in my lap.

That is oddly an extremely accurate and relatable metaphor
To me depresion feels like isolation and fear. I am suffering clinical depression and i feel isolated even when i am in a group of people. I have become afraid of people. I avoid people. I have isolate myself from them inside my roo. not letting anyone in nor talking to anyone. I am afraid to leave my room.
Total hopelessness and dispair
It just makes me feel like hopeless, and useless, and that no one will understand how I feel
Depression is difficult to describe. There are many different shades to it, it blends so easily with other mental problems like anxiety, and each person feels those shades a bit different than everyone else.
Personally, when my depression gets bad, there's just an emptiness within me. I can't feel emotion and my limbs feel hollow beneath my skin. Or, I'm so full of emotins like fear, anger, and sadness, that it all jumbles into that feeling of nothing. Sometimes, I'll want so badly to just cry or scream and let it all out, but I can't. My energy and motivation is gone with everything else so there's no tears or strength to yell out. I'll forget to eat because I wont feel hunger. I wont sleep at night because I'm too distracted by all the nothing that I'll forget to close my eyes. It's so hard to get up in the mornings because I'm still so tired and there isn't much else I can do other than to just lie there until well into the afternoon when I convince myself I should at least get something to eat.
the best I can describe it would be: Depression feels like a lack of sleep that doesn't go away. You're constantly exausted from even the simpilest things, leaving no energy for the things you care about, to focus on anything, or just getting out of bed.
@shyTurtle4493 Im a little late replying to this but I just wanted to say that this describes depression perfectly for me. I dont have energy or the desire to do anything...my eyes feel heavy all the time...and when I get into that state I long to be able to cry my eyes out. I think even worse than feeling intense sadness for me is feeling nothing. If I have something concrete to be sad about, and Im actively upset about it, I can handle it. But depression is more cruel than that. I could stare into nothing for hours and not have the desire to do anything else. But yet I want my life to change, Im not happy where I am but I lack the motivation to go anywhere else.
It feels like all of your energy has been taken from you and youve lost the ability to be feel any happiness or joy in life. Things you used to enjoy no longer interest you. Simply getting out of bed and facing the world takes a lot of energy and some days feels impossible.
it feels like I have no bones. I'm just hollow and I can hardly even stand because I have no bones to hold me up. my flesh feels as if it's sagging, my brain is an empty space. my eyes are dry even when I want to cry because I've shoved my feelings down so far I can't find them. the only thought echoing in my skull is how much I wish I didn't exist, no matter how happy I am. sometimes I convince myself I'm faking it and other times I'm thinking nothing, feeling nothing, seeing nothing as if I'm not alive.
Depression to me is feeling like you're dead or wishing you were.
