Every single day I feel extremely sad, depressed and lonely, as if I have no one and this is how the rest of my life is going to pass. To be very honest, I am just numb now and have zero hope. But on rare occasions when I hang out or party with my friends (we all live in different cities) I feel really happy and my mood is better. My boyfriend says that if I’m happy with I’m with my friends and “depressed” when I’m alone it’s not “actual depression”. Is he right? I’m definitely not trying to seek attention that’s why on very rare occasions I share such feelings with him, but when he said that to me I had no response and I didn’t know what to think of that. But hearing those words from him after I have broken down in front of him so many times and when he knows the situation I have going on at home, I was disappointed in him but at the same time I thought to myself that it is true, when I am with my friends I’m very happy but on a day to day note life just SUCKS! Am I actually depressed or I just think I am?

It sounds like you might be falling into depression. Especially if you feel alone and feel like you have no hope for life or anything. Even though you're happy around your friends that it makes you happy but that doesn't mean that you're not depressed. I understand how you feel. It's hard to feel this way. The way your boyfriend responded is sad. He shouldn't have responded the way you did. And honestly life does suck. I honestly would say find something that still motivates you and distracts you. Depression really takes a toll on your mental health. So please take care of yourself and stay safe. And we're here to talk if you need. ❤️

Depression doesn't mean you're sad at all times no matter what. There are things that can bring you out of it and make you feel happy for a while, but it doesn't last. Yeah partying with friends can make for great memories, but it's not going to make the ongoing situation at home go away.

I am also disheartened to hear your boyfriend isn't as sympathetic or understanding. He may just not understand how depression feels (which I would envy). Some people just can't imagine that amount of emotional pain and the endurance of it.

Forgive me if I'm reading too much into this, but it sounds like your depression may stem from a lack of connection around your home. You said you feel lonely and as if you have no one. So I'm guessing you don't feel any support or meaningful connection at home. Then when you go to your boyfriend and he invalidates your feelings, then you don't feel any support and a lack of connection there. Therefore, you only feel happy when you're around those that do support you; your friends.

I don't know where you should go from there, but I hope my insight is helpful to you in some way.

Best wishes, Cain

Its the same for me. Its exhausting to think that the rest of my years to come will be a constant struggle. I hope we both get better.
