eating problems when depressed?

Often I think that I don't deserve food when I'm depressed, or I'm extremely hungry and I deserve the pain of hunger. Is this something that happens to others, or could this be attributed to an eating disorder?

I go back and forth. Sometimes I'm a huge emotional eater, and sometimes I just can't be bothered to eat. Not sure about an eating disorder though. You'd have to check with your doctor about it.

I have the same tendency to go back and forth with that. But I'm also fairly sure it's not an eating disorder, just maybe a way of expressing emotionally in that way

I had this problem for years. It's the exact punishment I did to myself. They linked me to anorexia and bulimcy as well as depression. So it's a mix of an eating disorder and depression. I suggest you start taking in at least a small snack when you feel this way.

Thank you! I have been linked to both of those too, but I've never thought its that serious because I've only ever had small behaviors and not full blown eating disorder. Thank you for the support!

I randomly snack on stuff when depressed or stressed out. I try not to buy too bad of stuff to eat to help with the need to snack.

When it comes to my eating, I'm very inconsistent. Sometimes I just eat a lot for no reason and can't stop myself and other times I just don't feel like eating or don't necessarily have the energy to eat. It's kind of like mood swings. Everyone reacts differently to depression and poor/different eating habits is often attributed to it. It doesn't necessarily mean you have an eating disorder. However, it's good that you recognized this. Maybe you should check with a doctor or parent about this if it continues to bother you.

Disturbances in eating patterns are a common symptom of depression- whether it's having a reduced or increased appetite. However, if it's a case of denying yourself food, or binge eating when you aren't really hungry, it could be caused by an eating disorder.

This is EXACTLY how my problem starter. After not eating, the feeling of starvation in my stomach started to feel powerful. Eating disorders feel off of low self-esteem and a need for control (or at least it did, in my experience). I would get help if it's gone too far or find healthier ways to let out your feelings, because it turned into a full-blown eating disorder for me, and that's not what I want for you.

Does anyone have any recommendations concerning maintaining a good diet when you don't feel like eating? I don't purposefully stop myself from eating but I find that once food is in front of me it is no longer appealing.

That's the same with me. When I'm feeling down or overly stressed, I never want to touch food. However, my girlfriend usually tells me to eat when she knows I'm feeling down so she makes sure I get at least a little something. I do that for her too. The point is, having a great support system and perhaps just eating a little instead of your normal intake on days that you are feeling down, or more down than normal, is a good stepping stone :)
