Driving my partner away
My boyfriend doesn't often talk about his feelings, and gets uncomfortable when he does. I need to talk more often, but I struggle to find ways to engage with him. He has been snapping at me frequently because his job is stressing him out, and I tried to let it roll off and not nag him about it. When I look at the situation clearly, I don' think he realizes he is doing it, and I don't believe he is trying to hurt my feelings. But not talking about it made the situation worse and we had a fight. Usually when this happens, he is very sensitive for a day or two, then we go back to old patterns of me not saying anything when I am upset and him assuming I am fine. Or when I do try to talk about a small issue, i do it in an irritable way because I am already assuming he doesn't want to hear it. Then he sort says "Yes dear" and doesn't have an actual conversation with me about whatever the issue is, and nothing gets better. It always ends in a fight where my reactions to things that bother me end up being far worse than anything he said or did. I don't know how many more of these episodes we can make it through. I want to find a way to make him understand that having more frequent talk about feelings will probably help to break this cycle and make our relationship stronger. He recently told me that it seems like when things are going well I sabotage them. That surprised me because I thought it was fairly clear that things were not going well. I'm sure this all sounds very scattered, but I feel like my next move could make or break our relationship and I am scared of losing him.
@Seacook
I think this is the time for you to take drastic measures. You have to set your foot down and say "listen if we want this to work out communication is absolutly necessary. Hidding away from our problems and feelings won't help". Try to also be objective in your feelings. Breathe calmly, try to break down your feelings in a rational and clear way so he can understand. Do not hesitate and do not say things indirectly. You have to be straight forward, firm and calm.
About the fact he doesn't want to talk, all guys are different. For example my boyfriend was exactly like that but he had issues in the past that made him that way. Until I set my foot down and was brutally honest. After that he tried his best and bit by bit he's been changing much more and our relationship is healthy. Now in my case my partner had past issues, in your case can be something similar, or something in the present or even his personality, who knows? but that's what you have to figure out when you have a talk with him. Ask him why. And if he gives you an answer like "because I don't want to fight" don't settle for it, try to truly understand the reason. Don't be pushy yet be firm.
Also another advice is for when you have the talk with him find a good time. Try to see if he's in a good mood, that usually helps. Choose a time of the day when you guys are completly free. If possible to make things a bit more less awkward open some wine or put some dim lights to give a peacefull envirnment. That way you don't come out as agressive but more worried , if this makes sense.
I hope I helped a bit. Best of luck
