I have just had my appointment today. Changed my drugs to another so I can concentrate better. Had depression a number of years and made myself feel lonely. How to start again.

I've had depression for about a year and a half now and it's finally starting to improve with new meds/therapy. I'm glad I found 7cups.

Just want to say Hi 💖

I am not exactly sure what happened to me and still try to come to terms with it. So some support would be greatly appreciated.

I never thought this happens to me. I am a strong independent sport loving person. Life has ups and downs for everybody.

About 2 year ago my life changed completely. It was my choice. I split up from my ex and left my home and now live by myself.

I met another lovely guy after but it was never an easy relationship, there was many struggles but also lovely moment. There was a lot of up and down and no steadiness. Eventually it broke. He said he can't take ups and downs and he never wanted to add to my pain and he said he is not feeling the same way I.am feeling about him. So that was it.

But it got me thinking, was it me not being able to feel happy. I was stressed out most of the times and often felt anxious...that started even before I left my home. I had discussion with my Dr. and after more then 1 talk they suggested to take an antidepressant. I am taking it for a week now. I slowly seem to get better. But how do I know if I am depressed or its just life which is a b*? Would the tablets have an effect so fast? I am a little freaked out about side effects and all.

Up until now, I managed. I took the tablets because I just couldn't take the bad days myself anymore. I was getting through, just hanging in there. But I do need to function and work and I wanted to feel "normal" again.

So any thoughts?

@Sternchenmonster sounds rough. I hope things get better for you. In my experience, ADs never worked that fast. My first one didn't work at all after a month, and the second one started about 2 weeks in. Everybody reacts differently though, so it's possible you're already feeling the effects. Good luck! Just hang in there. Things will get better.

Hello, im Seren. I have had depression for a while now, but I am too scared to tell anyone. How are you supposed to tell someone that you have bad thoughts everyday?

@Rainyday24 Hi, not easy. I don't know about you, but I am not quite in terms with it, do telling other people is hard, because it makes it real. Just reach out, even if its hard. Maybe good supportive friend whom dont judge. I find family hard because they only want to see you well ;)

Hello Cathat!

I hear you with the odd worsening phases depression can go through ). Sometimes it can be triggered by stress, by something innocous (i.e., weather changes), and sometimes it seems to come out of nowhere. I'm glad you're still working on it though.

As for what to do, I think reaching out on 7cups is a good start; I'm new here but so far it seems like a very supportive community. If you need to talk, there are several here who will listen (including me).
You may also want to speak with a therapist or doctor about this; especially if it seems to have come from nowhere.

@Cathat Hi, good days, bad days. Try to not judge your feelings, not fight it, in my case it almost always makes ot worse. We all now it seems to be unbearable at times. I cant tell you anything else, exept look for small positive things. Try to go out for a walk, chat here or with friends.

Its tough.

Hi everyone. So I'm completely new to this, but this forum looks like an amazing place.

I want to ask.. how do you know if you have depression? It's passed my mind countless times over the last few years that maybe it's the explanation to how I feel sometimes, but it's so on and off for me; the feelings don't continue for a long period of time, so I've never been sure.

In the past I've always put a reason to the feelings (eg. I'm stressed from my studies), but this year I've turned my life around and my life circumstances are really great. In theory, I have nothing to complain about... but the feelings haven't stopped. In fact, they've become so much worse this year. I think I sometimes experience mild anxiety attacks. Recently I've been crying everyday. I can't stop it. I don't have an external reason for feeling like this anymore. Do you think I may be experiencing depression?

Sending love to everyone on here

@meera54321

These are just a few signs and symptoms of depression, which I hope will help you:

1 Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Such as, nothing will ever get better and theres nothing you can do to help me.

2 Loss of interest in daily activities. Such as, you dont care anymore about former hobbies.

3 Appetite or weight changes. Significant weight loss or weight gain.

4 Sleep changes. This might be insomnia, or sleepwalking, or just feeling exhausted most of the time.

5 Anger or irritability. If you get angry and irascible a lot for little things.

6 Loss of energy. Fatigue.

7 Self-harm. Emotionally or physically.

8 Reckless behavior. You engage in activities that might hurt you.

9 Concentration problems.

10 Unexplained aches and pains.

Also, a therapist might be a good idea if you are still not sure. You can find one online, here on 7cups, or plenty of real life ones.

Hello @meera54321

I hope this forum can be an amazing place for you! We're all here to support you and we'll do our best to be as welcoming as possible.

Ah, so am I right in assuming you haven't told anyone about what you're going through? I understand how difficult it can be to open up. There is a lot of stigma around "self-diagnosing" yourself. I think this stems from the fact some people don't do any research and just say they have depression because they think it's tragic and romantic or cool. Or alternatively, some people comment on posts venting saying "This is a symptom of depression" but of course, having one symptom doesn't make you depressed. However, despite this, there is nothing wrong with self-diagnosing if you do your research. I did a lot of research before deciding I could have depression. Paraphrased from mental health (among other topics) YouTuber Claudia Boleyn, "You're not depressed just because a doctor says so. You're mentally ill before you get a formal diagnosis." If you do your research and decide that you fit many of the symptoms, you could well be depressed or otherwise mentally ill. In which case, you may need to talk to someone or reach out. If you decide that you're not depressed but you're still struggling, please please reach out anyway. Mentally ill or not, you deserve support.

While I've talked about you diagnosing yourself being okay, I am not going to diagnose you because I simply can't. However, from what you've said, I do think it is worth looking into. Depression doesn't care about your life circumstances. It can hit anyone. If you're feeling consistantly low, please talk to someone. We are here to support you but unfortunately we are not doctors.

Good luck. Sending love straight back to you. heart

Have a nice day

EDIT: A good website to check out is the NHS Choices website
