Anyone Else Have a Child or Teen with Severe Asthma
I would love to be able to chat with someone else that has suffered from or has a child with severe asthma. My teen has very severe asthma and when she is not on several medications per day, she has to be hospitalized. She cannot run, exercise, or even sing without an inhaler. She is fine with it but I am not. Right now she is in a stage where it is out of control and we are using the nebulizer to avoid the hospital. It is working. I would love to talk with someone else who lives with this in their family. My daughter will be going away to college in 3 years and I already worry how she is going to handle this on her own. She is in charge of her own meds, has an emergency bracelet, and an emergency plan, but as her mom, I want to be there when she is sick. I have seen her almost not make it to the hospital before and It is terrifying for everyone in the family. Does anyone else struggle with the effects of severe asthma? Please reply. I would love to start a conversation. The weird thing is, my daughter was diagnosed at 2, had it until about 6, then did not have any asthma again until middle school. Now, she is in high school. Every since puberty hit, it is out of control. I am praying that it can go away again like it did before. We see a pulmonologist but still, she has issues. I am sorry if you are dealing with similar issues.
My asthma used to be quite severe, but it's gotten so much better. I also have complicating factors such as fairly bad allergies and nasal polyps. The last time I had a PFT I was told I wouldn't even meet insurance's definition for it (not sure what that even means, as insurance doesn't really dictate much here). It has been bad during periods as and adult though.
As a kid, I used to have to go to the hospital every 4 hours until we got a nebulizer at home. I needed for a bit in my 20s when I had pneumonia and probably should have used it again during a flareup in my late 20s although luckily there was a distinct short-term trigger so it was under good control after 2 weeks.
Hopefully the pulmonologist will give some tools to make it more controlled. I didn't know about nasal irrigation until my late teens, and since then I have come across more specialists who stress that importance of that.
