How are you and people you know doing as a disabled person in The United States?
I think we have made progress but I also think we have a ways to go. I see the biggest issues as employment opportunities for people living with Disabilities and also accessibility. There are many other important issues.
How are you doing in other countries?
This is hard to answer because it can be so different from one country to another. I know some of my brothers and sisters out there are struggling.
Do you feel supported?
I am grateful for the support I get but it falls short of my needs but I muddle through.
Do you feel included?
I do not always feel included.
Do you feel accommodated?
I do not always feel accommodated.
Is there room for improvement?
People who are living with disabilities want to participate and lead full lives. Each person has different limitations but it would be very helpful if we approached the problem with open-minded attitudes and a willingness to create as much opportunity as possible.
What changes would you like to see?
I would like to see more inclusion, more social events, more accessibility, more employment, and career opportunities.
@BlindGrapefruit I agree with you that we have made strides yet have room for more improvement. It is difficult to believe that in this state, Tropical North Dakota, prior to a couple lawsuits in 1984 disabled people were institutionalized, mainly in state institutions. Barbaric!
Employment oportunities for people with disabilities are atrocious. I know some people who have government subsidized jobs doing tasks such as rolliing silverware in napkins for restaurants for a nickle each one rolled. These are severly disabled individuals who earn far less than minimum wage. Unfortunately the money to be made in these programs are made by government and nonprofit organizations, not the people they supposedly serve. I call this "people as a cash crop". Exploitation angers me. Could you tell?
Fortunately in the United States and many other countries there is financial help such as Social Security Disability Insurance, Housing Assistance, Food Stamps and heating or cooling assistance. In some not so helpful countries disabled people are left to fend for themselves and survive by begging in the street. India comes to mind because I have seen documentaries about the problem in India. I am grateful for having been born in the United States.
I am sorry you don't feel adequately supported, included or accommodated in your community. What could be done better or differently to improve these areas for you?

When asked about barriers in my community I reply that my biggest barrier is peoples attitudes.
