Best way to

September 28th, 2020

Recently someone set a Expectation to high for my disabilty . I had to step. I wanted to so bad to talk to that person about what happen and hopefully fixed the problem. I keep on having thoughts all the bad outcomes and the relationship would be ruined,

what is the best way to be brave about talking to this person ?

Hi Hope! Im so sorry to hear that someone set an unattainable expectation for you and your disability. That can be super frustrating - especially if its happened more than once.

Its great that you want to have courage and speak to this person about the issue, though! Self-advocacy is important, and for sure not an easy thing to do.

I know when I have to self-advocate, I try to focus on a few things:

(1) Remembering that I deserve to be accommodated, and that Im not lesser because of it.

(2) A lot of mistakes are born from ignorance. Often, people just need a little education to realize why their expectations cannot be met.

(3) Writing my points and reasons down beforehand can be very helpful, as sometimes in the moment its easy to get flustered and fumble your thoughts/words.

(4) Set clear expectations right back at them! What are you trying to get from the conversation, which of your needs you expect to be met, and when youd like these things taken care of.

Goodluck! x
