Counting calories is just a tool for assessmentof our physicaland emotional well being, our caloric intakedoes not define who we are .

Excess or low caloric intake is a warning sign .The challenge here is to define the reason or the problem behind overeating or undereating. Once the cause is defined,it would be easier to avoid the guiltby facing the problem rather than ignoring it .

It depends on your personality and mental health issues. As a recovering anorexic, counting calories gives me peice of mind. Not because I'm trying to eat less, but I know how many calories my body needs, and if I know I need to eat 2,500 calories in order to help my body heal, I will make sure I reach that by counting the things I eat etc.

However it can become a very unhealthy obsession. I for one usto count calories in sauces etc.. and thats when things can become very obsessive. If you are doing it in a healthy manner, and only to benefit your health, I think its perfectly okay!

I completely agree. There isn't anything inherently bad about counting calories, but it very much depends on the situation, the reason, and the person. For me, counting calories has always been a dangerous pre-cursor to relapse, so I'll let myself look at calories when I'm purchasing things to determine if the calories/serving are something I'm comfortable with, but I don't count them on a daily basis. For others, though, it makes sense to stick to meal plans.

I think examining why you feel the need to count them will help you figure out if it's healthy or harmful in your situation.
