Any Advice?
Hello,
I have a binge eating disorder and it has affected my life tremendously over these past few months. I don't eat when I'm around friends or at school, but then when I get back home, I gain 5 pounds and feel like garbage. It's also really bad when I'm eating out in public with my family because I could eat all of my food before the rest of my family, then get reprimanded just because I was hungry. My therapist used to tell me that the human body needs food to survive and that your body will tell you when it has had enough to eat. But my body doesn't do that. It's like a monster in my head that constantly growls at me, telling me, "Eat more, you need more. Don't stop till you feel like you are going to explode" And even then, I don't stop. It feels like I don't control me anymore. So, I'm just wondering, does anyone else feel this way sometimes?

That is a difficult situation and yes i have experienced some of it........ i hate going out as i will eat everything too quickly....... and it is as if i do not feel full or i could just eat another full meal .... I had to really reflect on when this happened and why........ i can stay on a set diet but when bored or a feeling i cannot exactly define ...... sort of *** off/ upset or just putting things in my mouth so i do not tell some people just what i think of them ......
i also have a item where i clean my plate or not waste food .... my grandmother did this took her out with my kids and as kids ate slowly and sometimes did not feel like finishing she seemed to eat anything left over.........
Once I ID why........ i can walk away or put the fork down......sometimes a person may need others to help you see the items that set this off ...... like many items it takes practice to stop ......
the "tricks" of eating slower by putting utensils down between bites etc...
drinking water to feel full do not seem to work for me.............. but i have to really think why and divert my thoughts .... before putting another bite into my mouth......
i find when happier and busy i do not do this................ and if i speak out loud to others "i am bored please remind me if you see me wander towards kitchen" ......etc.
i think family stress makes this trigger i knew i did this more often when at family gatherings or eating out with others...... sometimes i order smaller items i am not fond of to try to avoid this ..... doubt there is one item that works for all but knowing what flips that switch gives you a chance to avoid it
@NyxLvsU I totally have this. I grew up with really conflicting messages from my parents about food, I had a finish-your-plate dad and a diets/weight-watchers mom so I had a really difficult time trying to manage my eating habits and I believe it contributed to my eating disorder, I have binge eating disorder. I hate eating out with friends, I usually cancel or lie about how busy I am, and I hate when theres snacks just like sitting out at gatherings or parties because if I'm bored or uncomfortable I feel like I always end up overeating and it's literally with like people around so theres that added shame of like oh everyone just saw the chunky girl stomach five brownies in an hour what the *** was that you know? Anyways I just feel out of control around food, and I'm in recovery for my ed now and I think I've made some great progress but I did binge on mothers day recently at one of these family gatherings.
Probably too long but basically just wanted to share that I really related to your post and hope we can both improve our relationship with food
