Is Therapy Worth It?

I’m only 18 and I’ve been contemplating on whether or not to seek professional help. I’m hesitating because I’ll be spending my parents money and I’ll feel guilty if I don’t get better. I’ve made a few improvements on my own, but not enough to stop the rapid weight gain I’ve been experiencing. I know recovery should have nothing to do with weight, but I just don’t want to waste even more money on new clothes. It’s not even just money that I’m wasting, I’m also wasting my time, my relationships with friends, and my sport career, among other things.

I feel the same. I have read stories about how therapists have actually ruined it even more or how it's a waste of money. We have to be really careful while choosing the therapist. Like I feel you completely. Hope you find the right answer. Am gonna talk to my parents finally and see what happens. I hope everything works out for you. Let me know if you wanna chat, am here! Lots of love to you! Take care.

@thatanonymousgirl22 I have been in therapy for a few months now, and it hasn't helped yet. Maybe bc I'm not in the mindset of changing. My parents make me go.

Yeah, I’ve learned that mindset’s really important. I experienced something similar but with my sport. I started losing motivation at some point so I jumped from coach to coach trying to find the best one who could help me get back on track. In the end, nothing really changed because my mindset didn’t change at all. I ended up quitting the sport when my binge eating reached its worst, but a few days ago I suddenly missed it and that motivated me to take recovery seriously. I think it would help a lot of you find something that will inspire you!

@thatanonymousgirl22 Opinions differ on whether therapy is worth it.

In real life I know some therapists and some people who have had therapy. My impression is that there are basically two types of therapists, but I'm not an expert and these are just my thoughts on the matter.

For one type of therapist the focus is on coping strategies, checklists and lifestyle choices. This type of therapist doesn't help you solve any of your problems, but you learn better ways to live with your problems, and you're maybe happier as a result. Therapy can continue basically forever because nothing ever changes much. You gradually get older and more used to having problems. Even if the therapist is cheap per session, the total cost of therapy can be enormous, spread over many years or even decades.

For the other type of therapist the focus is on finding and fixing an underlying problem. This type of therapist tends to get results in a few of weeks, sometimes after just one session. Therapy is tough, both for you and for the people who know you, because a lot changes in a short time. The therapist may be very expensive per session, but you don't need many sessions.

Unfortunately it's really difficult to find out how a therapist works without seeing them for a session or two. Sometimes a personal recommendation is useful—from your doctor, for example, or from someone you know who had therapy that changed their life in a short time.

When you try a therapist and nothing much has changed in your life after two or three sessions, then it's likely that the therapist is the first type. You have the option to walk away and try a different one. When you try a therapist and your life has changed dramatically after two or three sessions, then it's likely that therapist is the second type.

I don't know if these thoughts help or if they make things more complicated for you. If you'd ever like to chat about your situation, feel free to click on my profile picture and message me.

Thank you, this makes a lot of sense! I think I’ve already dealt with the underlying issues of my binging which was mostly just dieting and weight-consciousness. My binges have decreased both in amount and frequency and I feel a lot better, but I still can’t stop completely and I feel stuck. I think with or without therapy I should be able to get past this, but maybe therapy will give me that extra push? What do you think?

@thatanonymousgirl22 I agree. Using therapy just for that extra push sounds like a good plan.

Even if it’s just the first type of therapy.

Hi:) This reminds me of my friend a bit:)Depressed, weight gain etc..At the end she found out that her thyroid was causing the problem! So i would advice you to do a blood test-it will not do any harm, many people do a health check - just to check your overall health and vitamin situation !Sometimes the solution is somewhere else and it may be simpler than we originally thought:) As about the therapist ..it really depends on how the therapist is..trying a few free sessions would help you decide if it is the right one for you.If you have chemistry so that you can open up..Remember if you are hiding things from your therapist that means it is not the right one for you..If you find the right one believe me your life will change.A therapy also shouldn’t last long..Going to a therapist for ten years for example will not help you...The goal is to find ways through therapy that will give you the tools to deal with problems on your own so that in the end you will not need a therapist at all :)

@simona87 Good point! An overall health check can detect things that you never suspected, and that are easy to fix.
