When parents don't believe you

I just started speaking with a professional and one of my steps is to have a discussion with my family so they are aware of signs of my stuggle. When i started the conversation about having an eating disorder, my mother told me I was lying.
She said I'm too large to have an eating disorder.
Has anyone else experienced this? How do you recover when your main support system doesn't even believe you're sick?

Hello @PumpkinxQueen, I have experienced a very similar situation to yours and I can really empathize. Your mom might not understand your condition completely so maybe you could try educating her on the different types of eating disorders and how they are affecting you. I think another good idea is to have the professional explain to your mother about your eating disorder, if she thinks you're lying, maybe it would be different from another person. if that fails, it might be better to just try by yourself and with the help of the professional. My mom never really understood so I really fought the battle myself and now I can look back and see the progress I made. For me, the mindset is the worse part, and every day I fight the urge to return, but when the feeling dies down, I feel proud of myself. Maybe you could try being more positive about yourself and doing things you like to do or having a meal plan so you can work with that. Try not to focus much on the calories but the food itself. However, the relationship with food is different for everyone which can make recovery harder or easier. You can find people like yourself and join groups online to help aid each other in your individual journey, but be careful because some eating disorder groups can be harmful to your mind. Coming back to the topic of family, you can try talking to another adult or sibling about it without your mom looming over you. Good luck and I hope to hear good news!
