I thought I was recovered but now idk
I've been struggling with eating disorders for my entire life. There was a point about 3 or 4 years ago where I got to the limit. My bulimia was crazy, I kept controlling everything about food and it disnt seem like I have a life anymore. Things got better with time and some life changes... but now, all this time later, i still struggle with episodes of purging after some meals when i feel guilty or like my body doesn't look okay.
Most times it's not even a thing, but when I get triggered I go through some days where it gets worse and then I get better again...
I honestly feel ridiculous that after all this time, being 26yo, i still struggle with that. Also it's hard that i cant say i have an eating disorder because it's not even close to what it was someday, but I cant say I'm recovered either.... I feel so lost and confuse when I think about it.
@Nicolescarrousel021 Girl it's ok to have setbacks, even if you are an adult. I'm 23 and nowere near recovery. I'm just glad you have good days
@Nicolescarrousel021 there's absolutely nothing ridiculous about what you're going through or how you're feeling about it. Think of it...you spent so much of your life within these habits, it's completely understandable that you may go back to them when things get difficult or you're having a bad day. That's not a failure of any kind, personally I think that IS recovery. It's unfortunate, but I don't think there's always a "fully recovered" state, there will always be worse days where we end up falling back into old, ingrained habits, but what's important isn't that we have those times, it's what we do afterwards and what we do the majority of the time. To me, "recovery" can be a personal term. For someone, being recovered might simply mean not being anywhere near how they once were, even if they still have some tendencies. For another person, that may be what they call being in recovery. And for another person, the same situation could still be called having an eating disorder, because it all really depends on the individual. I don't think these little slips are anything to be ashamed about or feel guilty for, but of course if they're causing you distress, it can be another goal to work towards, to slowly start building up new coping skills to handle your bad days, so that in time you're better able to avoid using old habits in those times. But you don't have to be perfect to be recovered. You're still a human being, and as long as you're trying your best and keep moving forward, that matters more than anything
@Nicolescarrousel021 Hello thanks for reaching out for support here. It is not ridiculous at all to still be struggling. Everyone has setbacks in recovery and they can happen at any age.
