Eating Disorders Recovery: Practicing Self-compassion

The path of recovery from an eating disorder is undoubtedly an extremely hard one. The path is not always straight as well. Also, it varies for each individual. It takes time and effort. But it is worth it.

One of the most important steps towards recovery is practicing self-compassion. So...

1) What does self-compassion mean to you?

2) What can be some of the ways of practicing self-compassion?

3) If you have ever practiced self-compassion, how has been your experience with that?

1)What does self-compassion mean to you?

To me its a very complicated yet simple term, to me, its showing compassion to myself when I have every reason to do otherwise, when it is easy to just blame myself and be hopeless, I challenge those thoughts with something positive like "It does suck that I didn't get anything done today but I did a lot yesterday, maybe tomorrow will be better" rather than saying "I suck, yesterday I did everything and look at me doing nothing today"

2) What can be some of the ways of practising self-compassion?

One way as I mentioned above is challenging the negativity of your brain with something positive, other than what really helps me is to acknowledge that I am a human being, I was not made to be perfect, I will make mistakes and that is okay, I will fall sometimes and that is alright, all that really matters is that I keep fighting for the things that I desire or need.

3) If you have ever practised self-compassion, how has been your experience with that?

It's been good, didn't use to believe in that but when you hit rock bottom in life, you get desperate and try everything you can to make it even a tad bit better, so that is when I started practising self-compassion and favourite one is still the challenging thoughts part.

This was a really good post @SunFern, keep it up, love to have you in our community heart

@Hope thank you for joining the discussion. I absolutely love how you have expressed things from your own experience and more importantly told about both your struggles and triumphs.

It's really very important how we see things. and your example of appreciating the positives in life and your effort, rather than being stuck in negative thoughts is a great learning for everyone. Indeed it's important to accpet setbacks and fight back from that. We are not meant to be perfect, nor everything will go as per planned in life.

Challening thoughts is hard and i think that it needs practice. it doesn't happen overnight. i am glad that your experience in practicing self-compassion has been good. this is very inspiring.

hope your coming days are filled with sunshine. heart

@Hope

Such a lovely post! The point that resonated with me the most is that we're all human, and we all experience setbacks. But with each setback comes an opportunity for triumph. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. You're a fighter, and you've got this! Know that I'm rooting for you every step of the way.

Much love, kindness, and peace <3
