Dangerous or not?
Hey everyone,
I'm Meagan and I'm 14. I've always been a bit insecure about my weight (I've always been average while my sister has always been skinny) and recently it's gotten a bit worse. I've been skipping breakfast regularly and even sometimes skipping lunch. I've gotten in the habit of thinking food is a bit disgusting and that I really just want to be skinnier. I'm a bit worried that this might become a problem, as I'm not very good at recognizing when I've gone too far. I haven't started doing anything drastic yet and I still try to talk myself out of this craziness occasionally, but I'm wondering if it would be wiser to just stop before it starts or get outside help. I'm pretty sure I could stop if I wanted to I just don't know if I want to yet.
Thanks!

well i think you should stop before it gets serious... i personally have struggled with my weight for a long time but i started realizing that i am beautiful the way i am and so are you!!! as long as you live a healthy life, your weight doesn't matter. and when you read this go eat a fruit or an ice cream if you want to. lots of love and i support you <3
Hi @MeagantheMo! I think it's so wonderful that you're looking out for yourself like this. You're clearly very mature and responsible to be keeping such a good eye on your mental health. Eating disorders are very slippery slopes. For many people they start out fairly innocently and get out of control before they know it's happening. The fact that you've realized that something may not be quite right is really good, because the earlier you catch an eating disorder or disordered eating, the less of a grip it can get on you.
I think a good way to test whether you need outside help is to try to stop. You say that you think you could stop if you wanted to--well, if you can stop, you need to want to right now! At the moment, your eating patterns aren't very healthy--your body needs you to fuel it, not to skip meals! And if you continue with not only these unhealthy eating patterns but with these unhealthy thoughts running unchecked, this could become very dangerous very quickly. When you say that you haven't done anything drastic yet, you have to remember that drastic is a matter of perspective. Skipping breakfast and lunch to loose weight can actually be seen as pretty drastic! And the trouble with restrictive eating disorders is that you don't wake up one day and never eat again. There often isn't a sudden drastic change that will alert you that you've gone too far--you just keep sliding slowly down that slippery slope until all of a sudden you look back and realize that all the little, seemingly-not drastic changes have led to some pretty serious consequences.
I don't mean to scare you with any of that, and I don't mean to imply that you're certainly developing an eating disorder or anything like that. Right now, your patterns of eating and thinking are just a little worrying from my perspective, and I want to make sure you understand the potential of the situation to go in a bad direction if it's not taken care of properly. Seeing if you're able to stop these patterns of disordered eating on your own (and whether the worrying thoughts that have been plauging you) is a good way to see whether this is something that you need some assistance with. If returning to healthy eating patterns is difficult for you or causes you to feel anxious, depressed, or to think poorly on yourself, those are signs that this has the potential to turn into a much bigger problem and that you should seek outside support as soon as you can.
I wish you the best of luck!
