Has Anyone Here Been Skinny Shamed? I feel alone about this.

Body shaming. Chances are, a lot of us have gone through this. All forms of body shaming suck, and there is no excuse for putting others down because they look a certain way. however, what i wanna talk about today is Skinny Shaming in particular. being called a "bag of bones" "unhealthy" anorexic" "disgusting."( and of course being called the infamous skinny b*tch) When all about that bass came out,my plus sized friend told me it was about "skinny b*tches like you". People blame skinny teens for affecting plus sized peoples self esteem. But is it really our fault that we were born into a society where it was indoctrinated that skinny=beautiful? I've had my fair share of self esteem issues that, when vocalised, were dismissed as "attention seeking", because apparently skinny people don't have insecurities. When i look in the mirror on bad days, I still see myself as either too fat or too skinny. is it really fair to insult us naturally skinny people for being the way we are? I've always felt alone about this topic and it would mean the world to me if you guys could share your experiences. as always, I'm just a PM away heart

@macivilisation I'm very sorry to hear that. Asking people wether or not theyre "sick" is definitely not okay and just as offensive as asking people wether or not theyre obese, don't you think? You may feel lonely, but you are never alone. Thank you very much for sharing

Seriously thank you for sharing this. In our society now, it's not okay to body shame people who are fat, curvy and such, but it's okay to do so if they're skinny. I find society so offensive. What if the person you're skinny shaming has anorexia and much as she/he would like to not be, they can't help themselves. What if they're naturally like that. There is such a thing as fast metabolism which enables us to digest food faster.

I'm not even allowed to say I've gained weight when I'm only stating a fact. A fact! It's not like by me saying I gained that I'm judging the other person. It's not all about 'you'. I have this problem with friends too.

Suddenly, I can't be fatter than I was because they see me as skinny. I have gained a lot since freshman college (years ago) and only gaining more, not muscle weight. But I can't talk about my struggle to stop binging or the other way around because I have this stigma over me that I was skinny therefore I will forever be skinny. That I'm blessed and stuff. It's so annoying. And it feels like I have to live up to it which makes me hate myself, my body.

How is me saying 'I've gotten fatter' code for 'you're fat'? Ugh. Sorry for ranting.

@bluebellejune I agree completely with what you're saying! I'm fact, when I say I've gained weight people just go ahead and call me a humblebragger. Thanks so much for sharing your veiws and experiences heart

Skinny shaming is definitely hurtful on a personal level, but since it's not as institutionalized as fat shaming less people are up in arms about it. At the end of the day it's easier to find positive examples of people that have a skinny body type ( women especially ) then it is to find positive examples of women with a plus sized body type in the media, and woman are shamed less for having skinny bodies than for being fat or pudgy body ( even if in your circle of friends it may not seem that way. ) It sounds like you just have very insecure friends who are looking to tear you down; there are definitely people who will not do this. I had a mixture of fat, average, and skinny friends throughout high school and college and never heard nasty comments like the kinds that are posted in this thread, except from older female relatives. ( Who were just projecting their own insecurities. )

Maybe make new friends who aren't bullies? If it's coworkers, it's a little harder, but still try not to take it personally. If it's family, well, there'll always be something that family members will latch onto, especially for women. It's either your appearance or career or hobbies or lover or something. Sucks but true. Ultimately it'd be awesome if society would just shut up about woman's appearance all together since it's an impossible, ever changing bs standard to begin with that is none of their business and is only there to make us buy stuff so we'll temporarily feel better. Thanks Advertisers! I'm sorry people have put you down and I hope you find the support you need on this site to not let their toxicity poison you.

Was this a response to me?

I don't consider my friends bullies, but more like, super sensitive about the situation. And whenever I try to explain it to them, they won't hear it because they feel like I insulted them already. Is that bullying?

I wish there was a better way of talking to people about situations like this that they don't understand. But yes, ultimately, society should just shut up about appearances. To each their own body.

Well you know them better than I do, so I can't really tell if they're bullying or just being insensitive from way over here. If they are making you feel bad it definitely isn't a good situation either way. Hopefully you will find people you can confide in who will see your problems instead of their own.

I am skinny shamed all the time. It makes me feel about my body. I'm 4'10 and I weigh less than [edited by forum mentor for weight specifics] pounds. I am petite and naturally skinny I eat but people tell me all the time that I need to eat more especially my family. It makes me feel bad when people from my family tell me that I don't have a women's body because I'm so small and skinny. Since I have been dealing with depression I've lost even more weight. Right now I'm just trying to get better and be healthy.

@Brokendoll31 do I know you from somewhere? I think I do smiley anyways, yeah. Skinny shaming is huge issue and not to mention a DOUBLE STANDARD that doesn't seem to go away, don't you think? Hopefully society can get on to the right track about body positivity.

I think I commented on one of your post. But yes society puts the pressure on women to look good to have the perfect body. You're either too big or too small. I think all women all beautiful no matter what body type

Another petite buddy! I'm 4'11 and less than [edited by forum mentor for weight specifics] pounds and I have the same pressure from family - understand that this is just a phase society is going though and soon people will realize the error of their ways. You're doing amazing, don't change for anyone, only yourself

Oh yes yes yes yes yes! I have been skinny shamed for years. I don't think people realize what they are doing. I've gotten alot of skinny shame from overweight people and I wonder if there is a jealousy issue there? I'm small boned and I do eat bUT have a very fast metabolism.

@Loveisnumber1 I totally think that sometimes it is jealousy and other times its a projection of someone's own insecurities when they are skinny shaming. Also, yeyh I get hate from some of my plus sized friends even though I've been body positive right from the start. Thanks SO MUCH for sharing. heart

As someone who is naturally a size 6 I am constantly being attacked about my weight, people complain saying "being overweight is good because nobody likes to cuddle a stick" I don't think people realize how hurtful their comments are. I have a fast metabolism so I don't put on any weight and people see this as me being "anorexic". I'm glad that I'm not the only one who gets treated like this, everyone should be treated the same regardless of what they look like, it's acceptable to be overweight however you can't justify someone being overweight by insulting and practically bullying people who are skinny.

Im also glad to have found this post as this is something that happens to me from family / friends a little but mostly at work in passing comments from people in my office . And as i work with them i feel i cant say anything and its hard to hear these comments when im at work as when they happen I dont have anyone here really to talk to . I did recently mention it to my manager which i found helped. But skinny shaming is just unacceptable especially from adults but all the posts here have been really helpful
