Has Anyone Here Been Skinny Shamed? I feel alone about this.
Body shaming. Chances are, a lot of us have gone through this. All forms of body shaming suck, and there is no excuse for putting others down because they look a certain way. however, what i wanna talk about today is Skinny Shaming in particular. being called a "bag of bones" "unhealthy" anorexic" "disgusting."( and of course being called the infamous skinny b*tch) When all about that bass came out,my plus sized friend told me it was about "skinny b*tches like you". People blame skinny teens for affecting plus sized peoples self esteem. But is it really our fault that we were born into a society where it was indoctrinated that skinny=beautiful? I've had my fair share of self esteem issues that, when vocalised, were dismissed as "attention seeking", because apparently skinny people don't have insecurities. When i look in the mirror on bad days, I still see myself as either too fat or too skinny. is it really fair to insult us naturally skinny people for being the way we are? I've always felt alone about this topic and it would mean the world to me if you guys could share your experiences. as always, I'm just a PM away
I have not been skinny shamed but I had a few friends who have been. It is not your fault but society's fault for telling people it is ok to say those things. I think it is also has to do with girls constantly competing with each other. Like those plus sized "friends" got the song wrong. There is even a line in the song for small girls saying that even tho u might feel fat, you are still beautiful. And it is more about learning how to find the positive despite people who are plain b*tches, skinny or not, who bring down bigger people like me. Unfortunately, people are going to be mean cuz other people were mean to them. So all we can do is react in a civil manner and stand up for urself wen the time is right. And also inform people that it is wrong but in a sensitive way. Like a friend posted something on FB how fat acceptance shouldn't happen cuz this one plus size girl died early from a blood clot wen she claimed she was healthy. This is an example of how u should NOT inform people cuz it gives the wrong message and doesn't even have all the info. Like I am fat cuz of hormonal problems not cuz of over eating. I think posting poetry sketches on people who talk about skinny shaming are good. Powerful and short.
@NewRomantic667 - Body shaming of any kind is unacceptable. I think there is often more focus on the harm of fat shaming because it is prevalent not only among what people say to you, but also what society says to you, which is less of an issue with skinny shaming. But, that doesn't change the fact that skinny shaming can be incredibly hurtful, damaging, and cruel.
I actually have a lot of issues with the song All About That Bass (and really most songs by her), despite how darn catchy it is. On top of the fact that it combats fat shaming simply by turning it around and skinny shaming, it also misses the actual point of body positivity. It's OK to have curves not because "boys like a little more booty to hold at night", but because any body is beautiful and good, regardless of what anyone wants to say. Your self worth is defined by who you are, not what you look like or whether or not boys find you attractive. And all bodies are beautiful, regardless of size, shape, color, age, gender, or any other distinction that gets thrown on them.
Body shaming, regardless of its nature is wrong. Body positivity is always better!
@Anomalia your posts on this forum always brighten up my day!! Even I have quite a few issues with Meghan trainor but my friend just looves her. I couldn't agree with you more, body positivity is the way to go !
Yes skinny shaming is a real thing but people, I don't think, think it's "shaming" when they do it. I've had a lot of experiences with skinny shamers and from my experience, it seems like they're mainly larger people who (possibly subconsciously) will put you down to make themselves feel better. It's unbelievably frustrating when you eat healthy, exercise and take care of yourself and you're met with anyone from coworkers to complete strangers Making comments about your figure.
Also, felt like mentioning that I also don't like All About That Bass. That song is insulting to slimmer women everywhere. I'd much more enjoy the song and be like 'yeah girl, embrace your body' if she didn't tear down an alternative body image to her own.
One of my work colleagues love to make comments about how thin I am. In my opinion, it is just as insulting as saying how fat someone is.
I get that too but from random strangers. And one lady who knew my mother.
I guess the best way to deal with it is just to ignore them. Sometimes it is too difficult trying to make them understand our situation.
@bubblingTree25 I have the same thing happen to me at work. Several of my coworkers have said things about being jealous of how small I am. In my head I'm always thinking, no, you don't want to be like me, I have an eating disorder! Don't try to be like me - love your own body!
I ended up doing 2 months of Intensive Outpatient Program for ED, and had to reduce my work to part-time. I sent an honest email to all my coworkers, explaining where I was and about my treatment. I hope that by sharing my own struggles, others might realize that body size isn't the thing that determines health or happiness.
@Ellejae18
You did the right thing by going for treatment and taking steps to feel better about yourself. I hope that your coworkers will understand your struggle and be more considerate in their words and action. <hugs>
Hey everyone, I'm definitely glad to have found this thread... I have been feeling absolutely awful lately with being skinny-shamed, and I just don't know how to deal with people (family) anymore. I have always been tall and skinny, and I love food...I seriously snack all day and eat full meals... Well every family member of mine has become determined that I starve myself. I don't enjoy visiting them anymore, because all they do is point at parts of my body and say how gross I am, then they shove fatty food in my face and tell me to eat. They have talked to tons of people in my hometown and told everyone that I'm sick because I'm anorexic, so now I can't return home without feeling that shame. At this point, if I go to visit friends and family, I am constantly pushed food in my face with terribly rude comments about my figure... Recently some of my family showed up in my home and tried to give me thousands of dollars so that I would "start buying food"... They also brought over dinner and later told me it was a test to see if I would eat. (Which of course I had! I took seconds...) I have lost relationships with my dad and sister over them continuously judging me, and now feel so pressured to gain weight. Last time I saw them, they basically called me ugly on several accounts... All this time I have been confident about my body, and now I'm not so sure. My boyfriend of 2 years is wonderful to me and says that I have the perfect, healthy body, and that nothing about my figure should change. - He knows how healthy I am and has stuck up for me everywhere we go. No one else believes what I tell them, my family even demanded doctor's notes after not believing me. And whoever reads this, I PROMISE that I eat so much more than the average person, my metabolism is just incredibly high. How do I deal with this? When convincing people doesn't work, what do you do?
Have you vocalised your feelings about this?
Yes, I have tried several times but it doesn't work. They think it's me hiding behind an eating disorder, and then watch me even closer. The only time I'm not affected by it is when I go without talking to them... When I do visit, I've tried ignoring their words, or I've tried defending, explaining, anything. But if I say anything to them about it, they gossip together and it blows up all over again. :/
i feel fat But I am to skinny I train twice a day and still not feeling well when other people say some things that hurt me I go eating I don't get fat I hate people c allang other people fat just be the way you are you are beautifull I hope I can believe this myself
I am a skinny girl, and i used to be even skinnier. I have had a lot of insecureties and i have even been bordering on having an eating disorder. This does not mean i dont know i am skinny. So many people commented about my skinny body, and even said its way better to have fat. It wasnt my fault im incredebly skinny. No matter how much i eat i stay skinny. It gave me a really low body image. But no one believed me because i was skinny so i had to be super confident...
I am with @Anomalia 100% about that song. It is wrong at so many levels. I see it as a bad role model. I don't listen to Megan Trainer because she is promoting a very unhealthy attitude and conflict among women (I won't even go into her "dear future husband" song that I accidently watched). We should encourage people to accept who they are and work towards a healthy lifestyle instead of saying we should feel good because we can now collectively put down the other end of the spectrum.
That said, I range on the skinny side. Could be genetics because my dad is tall and skinny guy and I suspect I have taken after him. Now that I am working out, I have been losing some weight and I am working on gaining some lean muscle. But people would say "OMG, you look so thin and lost lot of weight". I am a fairly secure person for most part. I have never had any big body issues. But those comments even get to me. I start worrying about my weight wondering if it is a bad thing that I am losing. Then I have to remind myself to see the "positive" in these comments. Easier said then done. I started eating lot of good fats and proteins. But I agree, these comments that "omg, you are so skinny" could possibly cause people to panic and worry, negatively impacting someone's health.

Skinny shaming is just as bad as fat shaming. And promoting obesity is just as bad as promoting anorexia. Instead we should strive for health - not for looks, but to feel good, live longer and maintain a healthy lifestyle. All my life I've always been "too thin", and I know many have been labeled this too. In this world you will always come across judgemental, jealous or rude people who will do anything they can to tear you down. It's up to you to decide whether you're influenced or not by them. You can never stop the remarks, but you can decide how you feel about them. So the next time someone decides to throw another thin shaming slur, take it as a compliment - because there are millions of girls who would do anything to look like you, your body isn't anyone else's problem.
I've learned that you can never make people happy with your body. There will always be someone to tell you your doin it wrong, I've been there....I am here. I used to be extremely under weight and was picked at by everyone friends family strangers. I have since gained weight and in my opinion look healthy. But as soon as I am confident and comfortable someone made the choice to knock me down and use the words " your getting a little big..." I LOVE my body.
@courageousprune6111 - There is nothing I like hearing more than "I love my body"! Woohoo!
Oh my goodness, I am skinny shamed so much! It's terrible, every day I'll be asked by people if I'm sick or if I have anorexia or if I'm dieting. Sometimes people don't even ask and just assume. They call me unnatural and unhealthy. They think I'm a bad influence on children because apparently I "can't be naturally like this" . And a lot of people seem to care about fat shaming, which is great but then they seem to think that skinny shaming isn't real and it's just a cry for attention. From when we're kids girls told to be skinny but also have a figure. Do people understand how hard that is? I've been thin my whole life and I've always been shaped like a boy. I've been bullied because of my size before, mostly by my own friends. They tell me that I'm ugly and that no one will love me because I'm not attractive. I'm really self conscious now because of my size and my weight. I'm 5'3 and only [edited by forum mentor for weight specifics] pounds. I'm scared to go to the doctor because I don't want them to know how much I weigh. I'm scared to wear a bathing suit because I don't want people to see my ribs. My own family doesn't want to hug me because I'm "to boney". People tell me to eat more, and I try but I've also had digestive problems since birth so it's hard for me to eat to much. It makes people think I have an eating disorder. Also, now that being bigger is more widely accepted, the media is coming out with things about it. I don't like listening to the radio and hearing songs about how I'm a "skinny b*tch" or about how people prefer bigger girls so I'm out of luck. Society is shaming me every day for the way I look and at the same time thin people are still being blamed for making others feel bad about their size. Thin people feel bad about themselves too, not every skinny person feels confident in their body. I feel like I should like myself and yet I can't. I just want to feel normal for who I am, not like some freak who has to hide because I'm "fake".
Oh, and the worst part? I'M STILL YOUNG! I'm far to young to be feeling like this, it's unfair. People my age should not be told that they aren't sexy enough or that I'm setting a bad example for children! I have major self confidence issues and this is one of the reasons why. And I know that this isn't going to stop when I'm an adult. I don't want to have to go through this for the rest of my life. I'm to young to take this kind of pressure.
@BouncyFish , yes, I've felt this way before as well. But in all honesty I think we should all accept ourselves and then let criticisms bounce off our backs. Its easier said than done, but its feasible goal to work towards <3
Thank you for that :) I have really low self esteem so I struggle with letting things roll off my back but I'm going to try...
You're not alone on this I'm 5'1" and weigh [edited by forum mentor for weight specifics] lbs and.people always tell me to eat more and that I'm too skinny. People who.don't even known me will come up to.me and be.like. "you need a sandwich" little do these people know I eat more than my father and I love food. I have a very high metabolism. I totally feel you!💜 just remember that you're beautiful just the way that you are! (If you want to try and gain weight before bed try eating a bowl of cereal!) It helped me a lot!☺
