Managing Education with an Eating Disorder
Hello Wonderful ED Warriors,
Today I wanted to discuss the subject of education with an Eating Disorder. In particular when you transition from high school to university or college. This is a transition that can often be challenging on the recovery process and one that may make individuals anxious. I was hoping today we could come up with a few tips in the comments for managing these transitions, whilst maintaining your recovery and health.
I think one of the main tips I can give, is to put a support system in place for when you are finding things challenging - knowing that you can still pick up the phone and call somebody if you are having a difficult time, or get that support you need from somebody you trust - can make the difference between suffering alone, or being able to make small steps to make things easier!
Do you have any more tips you
I 1000% agree about the support system thing! It can be scary to talk to people about what you're struggling with, but knowing who you can turn to is enormously helpful - whether that's family, friends, a counselor, a support group, etc.
Another tip I would add is making sure that when you're setting a new schedule and routine that you include meals. It can be easy to forget (or to deliberately avoid) to schedule meals, but having a routine around them helps a lot. For me it was helpful to know that I was meeting other people for a meal because then a) I wanted to go more because it was with friends and b) I knew I couldn't just skip without it being noticed. For some eating around others might make it harder, so planning a routine where you can stop and get food on your own and sticking to that might be more helpful. But being diligent about it from the beginning will help with the transition, I think.

This for sure is an important topic and I think students should be able to get better support when they are struggling with an eating disorder while in school
