Picky Meets Apathy

I have a huge problem: I have no motivation to eat. I don't know if it's related to my depression because treatment is working well; I'm not depressed. If I don't already have something i want to eat in the moment, my hunger just dies and i end up not eating anything at all. I pretty much only eat if it's something I really like, but most of the things i like are NOT healthy. I've lost a lot of weight and muscle mass, to the point where it's difficult for me to do daily tasks. I really want to be healthy, but I can't bring myself to eat healthy.

Im really worried because it's getting worse. I'm exhausted all the time, feel so weak, and im even less motivated to eat. I've tried to trick myself by putting greens in smoothies, eating snacks with veggies in them, and eating more meat and dairy, but i eventually and inevitably loose interest. I've been a picky eater my entire life, but never to the point where i completely opt out if it's not something i like. I've been try to eat enough to at least function, but it's been getting so difficult lately.

@FrostFeather

I am sorry you are struggling with this. It sounds very frustrating when you are clearly trying so hard.

I know when I am struggling to eat enough solid foods, sometimes I am able to drink meal replacement supplement drinks and also drink some protein shakes.I do that on top of whatever solid food I am still able to eat, in order to boost my calories and nutrition up. At least that way you'd be be getting more energy and nutrition in; and hopefully it would give you more energy, and help you stop losing more muscle and more weight.

However this sounds like the kind of issue that you'd really need to work on with a doctor, as there could be a lot of possible physical and / or mental health reasons for why this is happening.

I really hope you can find an answer and a way to solve this issue. My heart goes out to you.

Hi, thanks for replying! I’m eating and feeling a lot better now; I think it was a combination of my meds and being really stressed out. My doctor did recommend getting nutritional drinks, but I don’t need them anymore since I’m hungry and eating normally again.

Cutting sweets from my diet seems to have helped; when I eat a lot of candy, I loose my appetite for a couple days. It’s kind of a bummer since I love sweets, but i feel better when I haven’t eaten any sweets for a while.

@FrostFeather As I see it, it's better to eat something than eat nothing. So if you "need" to eat something unhealthy to actually eat, then do it. You need food, and if you only eat some foods then eat those. I can also recommed trying to buy proteinshakes or protein powder to mix with water as that can be easier to get down and there are a lot of flavors you can choose between :)
