Unable to eat

August 17th, 2017

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure whether this is the right place to ask for help - but I simply hope that I'm not alone with these problems and some of you might be willing to share some tips or skills or anything to get out of this again.

Soooo... basically, I'm unable to eat anything. There's no physical reasons behind this - I know as much. Yet I get sick even thinking about food, for no reason at all. Or at least I cannot perceive any logical reason for it. I know this to a certain degree - being unable to eat when I am really stressed - but I'm still on holidays, and not stressed at all. And those "not eating" times were over after like a day. I haven't eaten anything since Monday. I've got no idea how to get out of this again. I keep going by drinking juice, lemonade, milk - to at least have some nutritients, though barely enough to function, I know.

How do you trick yourself into eating again? I'm tired of this all. I want to eat, I'm hungry. Yet looking at food makes me sick again. I've got no idea what's wrong.

I think the other commenters have a good point about trying to distract yourself and go slowly with eating. I'm guessing that by now some of the problem is physiological and not only a mental block. You could try to choose drinks that have protein in them like a smoothie with a supplement in it or "Boost" type drink. If there are foods that have been easier for you to eat in the past, turn to those again for a short while to get back into eating.

The other thing is just to make sure you aren't dealing with some physical health problem that is unrelated to the ED. So, if you have any other symptoms you might want to check in with your doctor.

Good luck :)

Thanks for your reply. I hope that you're wrong and that it's not a physiological problem - as harsh as it may sound, I don't have time for those right now, I'm starting a new job in 2 weeks. I'll check with my doc - I've got a checkup next week anyway, fortunately. I haven't noticed any other symptoms - other than being extremely crabby due to lack of food, and the occasional hypoglycemia at nights. But I know how to handle those.

I'm not a fan of smoothies - or protein drinks - so I'd rather avoid those. I hope that milk, cocoa and juices will be enough to keep me running for now. Hopefully it'll all return to normal again soon. It has always done so far. But it's never taken that long.

Physical or psychological, it sounds like this issue is bad enough where you need some professional help. People can give suggestions for tips to try to deal with it, but it's worthwhile to get the actual problem figured out and treated as best as it can be too.

Well, the good thing is that it sounds like you have been through this before so you have some ideas of what foods to try to get you back on track.

I'm glad to hear you have an appointment with your doctor next week. It would be good to check in about it if you haven't started feeling better by then.

I know - and I will get help for as long as it doesn't endanger my job. It's always worked out without any professional help so far - and I've got no idea why this time is different. "Usually" things start to go back to normal after more or less 48 hours - now it's been more than twice as long, and it's disconcerting to see how much it's affecting me. I don't want it to.

I'll find something in time, I hope. Till now, it just went away for no apparent reason and I went back to eating normally just as if nothing had happened. Not sure whether that's a valid strategy after a week - trial and error. It'll be ok.

Thanks for your help!
