Lost a former friend and feel awful, am I the bad guy?

I'm reposting this here since I mistakenly posted it in an older forum, so here is how it happened.

It’s been a while since I last came here. However this is really sad news to tell: My friend I spoke about? They and their friends cut ties with me. It’s because it finally reached a breaking point where when any bad news from them happens that I lost it. I realize the errors and they sent one of their friends to say I broke their hearts and such. I was willing to take responsibility for my actions and apologize. However they rejected the apology and their fired me for that ex friend from the job I use to be in, telling me to get off the internet in a threatening unsafe manner. I was being obedient and deleting most of my social media accounts doing what I was told, though they cooled off a bit but still sent me demonizing insults and telling me that it should be my “wake up call” and when I explained this to another friend who wasn’t toxic, the ex friend spied and scream by text saying nasty things and with a raged “I never want to see you again” text which they said one time that would be cowardly to do but in the end the ex did it that way proving they were no worse than the enemies they made. So I now lost full contact knowing that they’re gonna demonize me and possibly spread slander and such online just to get to me, despite no longer using most social media. The sad thing was that when I was cut off, ironically, I felt free. Free to be myself and try to make things right with the old friends I was forced to give up on. So I need to ask, was I the evil one for being too obedient and being a coward for doing exactly what they said or was the ex? Please let me know.

@JBZ64z091083I’m sorry you’re going through such a painful and confusing situation. From what you describe, it seems like there was a buildup of tension and strong reactions on both sides, eventually leading to a complete break.

That said, I don’t think the question is “who is the bad one,” because in situations like this responsibility is rarely on just one person. It may be more helpful to acknowledge that some of your reactions might have been hard for them to handle, just as their way of ending things and communicating sounds very harsh and not constructive.

The fact that you felt some relief after the distance is also important: it might suggest that the relationship had become more stressful than healthy for you. It could help to focus less on judging the past and more on what makes you feel safe and well in future relationships.
