Why is it so hard?!

Why is it so hard to find good friends? Friends who truly care and aren’t toxic or won’t manipulate you for their own gain? How about just people who care in general and actually see you. Can anyone tell me? Has anyone had success building a support network from thin air?

Hello and welcome to 7 Cups, I mean it from the bottom of my heart, that you are not alone in felling lonely. There are a lot of members in the same boat

Myself being highly introverted and also suffer from social anxiety it isn't easy for me to make friends in real life. Is there a quick recipe for making friends, I am sure for those that are extroverts have no problem making connections. Outside of work (just 1 friend) I have no friends, so life for me can be quite lonely 🥺.

If you need someone to chat with I'm here, members can only openly chat in the different sections of Cups, there is a Pen Pal section there a thread can be started between 2 or more members, there is no judgement from members.

Sending lots of hugs your way 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

I'm sorry you're in the situation you're in now, and your problem is real. I can't pinpoint the exact cause, but I think one of the main issues is a lack of self-respect. You're trying to make friends and are willing to do anything for them. If you don't respect yourself, mean people sense it and are ready to take advantage of you. So, first and foremost, you need to put yourself at the center. They need to understand your value too; it's a team effort. Until you love and respect yourself, you'll attract all sorts of toxic people. But I hope you can figure this out and find someone who's ok. Hang in there and believe in yourself!

I definitely had this problem before I started therapy. I’ve been growing in self respect but I put the cart before the horse and started building a support network right after I began therapy. Turns out, now that I’m more healed, those people were just less toxic than my family and other people who have betrayed me but not true friends. I definitely think it all happened for a reason. Maybe so I could learn to see red flags and what I overlooked in the beginning so as not to make the same mistakes again. It was my own boundaries that caused the end of the friendship because I have now gained some self-respect. I know I have further to go, but I just find red flags everywhere now. It’s so hard to find good and loving people who truly care for others without underlying motives or dysfunction that is harmful in friendships.
