Sentence by sentence story

I'm depressed and exhausted and I still need to get work done today, but I thought if I started a game, that'll lift my spirits and give me some motivation.

Here's how it goes: I start the story with a sentence. You continue the story with another sentence. And then someone posts another sentence. Etc. 

Rules: you can't end the story in your sentence. you can't post twice in a row, but you can come back and post another sentence after someone else's turn. Let's go!

I will start: There once was a girl with red hair who, while out on a cold walk, found an odd mask on the ground.
