A “Deep” Question… ;)
When someone owns land, do they own it to a certain depth or all the way to the center of the earth?
I dunno...but if it is true then I'm a happy guy. 😁

in most states you only own i think 3-5ft. otherwise you have to get permits

@slowdecline48 Technically (depending on the legal system and how it is worded) the state owns the land and we pay taxes like rent. You need to have a permit to dig up to a certain depth. Some countries even have laws requiring you to surrender any treasure you find on your own land to the government. In some countries, the government has the right to seize your land if they discover petroleum, critical minerals or artifacts of archaeological importance. And don’t forget about airspace—you only own your land up to a certain altitude (Public airspace and regulations). In some countries, you can’t casually launch a rocket or send up a hot air balloon without permission.
@azurePond If the state owns the land, then what good is the title to it?...you have a point, though. Even though legally one can "possess" land, if you become delinquent on your taxes the government can (& usually will) seize it for payment. As for the rest, I'm glad I don't live in any of those countries. The US has its problems, for sure...but citizenship still has its perks. Besides everything you stated, in some parts of the world you can lose your land (or other assets) just because governing officials are corrupt & greedy enough to make up a reason to confiscate it. In other words, Third World 🐂💩. Even here, we have a similar problem with civil forfeiture law...one of the more egregious consequences of the War On (Some) Drugs. I doubt the policy will ever be revoked, as local & state law enforcement agencies benefit from it.
