Lost Third Spaces Adults Miss
What are some third places you miss having around? Do you think not having somewhere to go, without the pressure of spending money, is a factor in the increasing depression rate? What kind of third places would you create if you had the funds? What’s an example of a third place you would like to go to? <3
“But what's the meaning of a "third place?" So, your first place is where you live, your second place is where you work or go to school, and your third place can be virtually any location that doesn’t fall into the first two categories. Coffee shops, parks, bookstores, churches, and community centers can all function as third places. The only real requirement is that nobody is forcing you to show up.”

@jesusredeemedme2425 Farms and fields, swings by the the trees. I just love places that are calm and not crowded. I love roads too, the ones that are surrounded by pine trees. I guess I'll just create a small house on top of a mountain with foggy twisted roads and step fields.

I think that it's a huge factor in terms of rising depression rate.
There's so many places I've gone around in my life that are different or gone now. I miss the library, the Chinese restaurant where my grandma was friends with the owners, the forests near my house that used to be bigger and exploration-friendly. More than anything, I miss my grandma's house where I could go to swim anytime. I can still walk around these places in my mind. I know the feeling of the air, the smell, where everything was.
Arcades <3
Those are coming back I think. They're trying to anyway.
There’s like a handful in my area. One is basically “break the bank”, and another is one of the last ones like from our childhood, but very clean and new. :)
We kinda have the same. When I lived in NYC, barcades were pretty popular. I'm not sure that kids can go in any of those since they're a bar also. Dunno if they're still popular either.
Yeah, we got some of those here. I feel much less comfy going to those tho lol
We don't really have those where I am, I think there's lots within an hour drive though. I never got to spend much time at barcades, so not sure how comfy I feel at them. I definitely went to bars a lot at the time though, so it felt like kind of a bonus.
For a certain time in my life, I went to bars & clubs. They can be great third places, but--this is important--the trick is to find one that suits you. You have to pick a hangout with the kind of crowd you can fit into. Like if you're a dyed-in-the-wool urbanite with refined tastes in art & music, a honky-tonk with everything Hank Jr. ever recorded on the jukebox & a mechanical bull is not the place for you.
That was back then. These days the only third place I have is a diner in town. It's a franchise, not a true local place...but it feels like one because there's a fairly solid crowd of regulars who show up. It's usually pretty laid back...I've brought art materials there to do a little sketching & painting, a couple times. This time of year, I sometimes hang out for a while after a meal just to stay out of the scorching sun.
