What's your Unpopular Opinion
A place to respectfully share opinions that are new, different, controversial or unpopular.
This is not a place to share hateful values, insult groups of people, or attack others. Be kind, respectful and reasonable. Disagreement should not cause conflict.
My Unpopular Opinion:

An unpopular opinion to me is when i hear people talk negativiley about meds.
it's ok not to want them but why can't people understand just because you don't like them or if ONE brand did'nt work for you, that does not mean it wont wrok for others. but when people go on group chats and talk a lot and mostly from a place of ignorance, i can't stand it. i get beyond frustraited, there are diffrent medications that can help a lot of people and saying things like "i am better then that crap" "or i am stronger then that" grinds me down. i am a listener here, and i find it really unempathetic when people say things like that, this site runs on the unconditional support of others. typing blanket statments like that for so many people who suffer to see can really be damaging.
what if i was a guest in the group needing some direction and wanted to try medication along with CBT/DBT mindfulness ect. and i come across that kind of judgment, i had hope meds would work and now i don't.
so frustraiting when people do that. give hope don't create hoplessness.
@25Ashley
I completely agree! It's ignorant to completely ignore the incredible impact medicine can have on our well-being. Some people genuinely need medication for any hope of improvement. I think we need to be better educated about the positive and negative effects of medication
@25Ashley Totally agree with you on this.
Oh my gosh PREACH!! Someone finally said it!
I believe that sex and every form of sexuality should only be expressed within the context of marriage. It's not a question of "how far is too far?" when it comes to a relationship, but rather, "when can we start?" (referring to openly expressing sexuality with one another). The answer to that, I believe, is marriage.
@JungRogers1950
That's unfortunate, given that gay marriage isn't legal in many parts of the world.
Very insightful, I really like this answer 🥰
I dislike censorship, euphenisms, the softing or demonizing of words.
Some great examples/explanations:
(Warning there will be swearing - duh xD)
1) One of my unpopular opinions is that nothing has to matter because nihilism makes me feel 100000% better. It's that everything comes and goes repeatedly and you don't need to care when things go because you'll get something like it eventually, if not in this life then in another life.
I'm usually stressed when I think of people leaving me but when it doesn't matter and everything, including myself, is replaceable then I become happier. It's safer to be without needs past the basic ones.
2) Another one of my unpopular opinions is that a lot of vague, black and white statements don't at all help me feel better. This is mostly in a context where the other person hasn't even thought out things enough and is just saying something stupid that they can't validate to cover it up. I don't like hearing "I love you" unless there's an explanation. I don't like hearing "Just have faith" because that makes me angsty and I don't like the idea of hoping for things that don't happen unless you make them happen. I don't like the phrase "Everyone has a soulmate" romantically because we just say that as a species that mates to reproduce as it makes us feel better. I let a lot of these things go but nothing actually consoles me much unless it's thought out and detailed.
3) I think that Borderline Personality Disorder possibly makes a person be a better therapist and if a psychiatrist doesn't know how to help BPD then they're not that good at their job.
Okay so not trying to disrespect anyone when I say this, it is just my lack of knowledge about it and if anyone would like to respectfully educate me if love to hear it, but I don't understand when people say they feel like another gender. (Ex. Boy feels he should be a girl) why? Is it bc the boy wears dresses? Or a girl plays with action figures? That's giving a strict definition to gender. A girl can play with action figures and be a girl and boy can wear dresses and be a boy AND masculine.
Unpopular opinion 2:
My unpopular opinion:
If I hear one more person say black people cant be depressed I might scream. Considering I am black and I have depression. Black people can have depression, anyone can it's obviously not based on your race. I think we should raise awareness about depression and how serious it is and not just talk about for a week or two on your freshmen year of high school and assume you know everything about it.
@pluckyTree9287
I read your unpopular opinion on how genders feel drawn to opposite gender objects such as action figures or a dress and that shouldn't make them feel like they should be a different gender. I think if a man would rather wear a dress than a t-shirt and pants he would probably feel different, as though he shouldn't be wanting to wear this dress because all of his friends are wearing a t-shirt and pants. He would probably feel like didn't belong and the only way for him to "belong" is if he was a girl. Because if he was a girl it would be "normal" for him to wear the dress. Idk it's all about perspective.. But that's how I see it.
@pluckyTree9287
1) When people say that they feel like they don't relate to their physical gender, it means that they have dysphoria which is when you don't think you feel /you/ with the private parts that you have. For example, this is when someone who is physically seen as male would rather have intercourse while having female sexual organs instead of male ones.
Someone who's cis is comfortable in the physical gender they were born in and is either male or female. This means that for example, they feel like they identify with she/her pronouns if born female and would prefer that over other ones. A cis guy would like the pronouns he/him. Someone that doesn't care what pronouns you use for them may be genderfluid. Some people feel distant from any gender applied to them and they'd rather have they/them pronouns.
Gender is different from gender roles. For example, there's people who are still male but don't follow male gender roles. This can be seen in tomboys or more feminine guys. Still, often when trans people get an operation to transition from one gender to another, they will follow some gender roles of the gender they feel like because they just think it relates more to them.
Some trans people would pass as a cis person of the gender they got an operation to transition to while others who aren't as far along with their treatment won't always pass as easily. Some trans people don't want to or don't care if they pass as cis.
There's also drag queens who aren't always necessarily transgender. Drag queens are just guys who wanna dress up in feminine and often over exaggerated outfits for fun. They often have a persona for how they dress but because it's just for fun, they aren't always trans as it's just that, a role for them to play.
This is as far as I know about trans issues, anyone can feel free to correct me if they find anything I've said wrong.
2) That's really messed up that some people think depression doesn't apply to black people because like you said, that's something anybody can go through regardless of their race. It is disheartening that depression isn't mentioned or learned about enough overall because being ignorant about something so common is scary. By learning enough about depression, it's easier to help it appropriately and it's unfair that many schools don't do that justice.
@Yourfairygodbro
This is exactly why I love expressing unpopular opinions! It helps us connect, educate and understand one another - thank you for input
@MidniteAngel That's true, it helps different opinions be understood when they're talked about. I agree. You're welcome!
@Yourfairygodbro
thanks for clearing it up. I still don't understand 100% but it's better than it was thank you , and thank you for being respectful about it
@pluckyTree9287 You're welcome! I'm glad I can help for as much as I did.
It's very difficult for me when people are overly optimistic, positive and happy. Sometimes a person can be so depressed that nothing helps and nothing makes sense and they can't just get themselves out of it with a little optimism and gratitude. That depth of depression should be acknowledged and validated too.
@Chiaroscuro1
What a valid point!
@MidniteAngel - Thank you
I have so many so I'm just posting as I go along but I hate when I get the nerve to talk about my depression with someone and they are just like "Think I have so many so I'm just posting as I go along but I hate when I get the nerve to talk about my depression with someone and they are just like "Think happy thoughts!" "Be positve" "Read a book" "Stop being so negative all the time" you sound so ignorant stop it! If depression was as easy to "cure" that all you have to do is think positively don't you think I would've done that?! This is more than just thinking happy thoughts. My mad is the place where happy thoughts get ripped up, shredded and eaten by the demons in my head . Like stop. If you don't have anything else to say then tell me but stop saying that. It makes it seem as if you can just brush it off like it's easy and all you have to do is think positive. I get they don't understand, they live in a world with magical ponies and rainbows and their version of negative is when it rains. No. My world is dark grey sad all the time. thoughts!" You have absolutely no idea what it is like.
@pluckyTree9287
Finally some who has said it!
I remember being told by a listener to "Think Happy Thoughts"
Geez - why didn't I think of that - happy thoughts? You're a genuis, you should write a book. I think I'm cured! (Note the obvious sarcasm)
-.-"
Some people just don't understand how complex depression is
@MidniteAngel I agree!
( this is my view and by saying this I don't mean to offend )
people with no experience with depression or similar think that depressing can just be cured by doing a simple activity, it is more psychologically deeper and more complex than just 'thinking happy thoughts'- that usually doesn't work in my opinion.
@pluckyTree9287
u am so sorry this is hard to read everything kept deleting so I had to retype but I had no idea it would still show up. My apologies .
@pluckyTree9287
i am so sorry*
Another unpopular opinion. I think it should be okay to take a stiff dose of sedatives and just feel comforted for a while without being frowned upon. I don't take sedatives everyday. I am on chronic medicine, but the sedatives I manage. I do my meditation and my mindfulness and my self care, but sometimes something happens and I feel now, now I need to float. And I wonder, if they give me 3 tablets 3 times a day when I'm in hospital and they give it to me for 3 weeks straight, why is it not okay for me to take 4 or 5 tablets once in a while without taking all the rest? One stiff dose when I need it. Which happens maybe once or twice a month. Why is that wrong? I feel that is what I need. A time-out. Why do I have to feel like I have to hide that?
My unpopular opinion? Your body belongs to you. If you want help to stop self harming, you deserve it. But if you decide it's a coping mechanism you want to use, no one has the right to try to force you to stop.
@Topsy
That's absolutely true - people ultimately do not have the right to force someone to do or stop doing a certain action unpon themselves. All we can do is provide support
@MidniteAngel - Does that go for suicide too?
@Chiaroscuro1
We can support those contemplenting suicide - but ultimately we have no control over their actions. And we should not expect their obedience - we are no God. We don't get to decide what they do.
@MidniteAngel - I agree.
If I may ask another question? Should therapists or psychiatrists intervene and hospitalize suicidal patients against their will? I'm also wondering how a person would go about deciding where to draw the line for themselves like that. Where does the support stop? If I know a friend intends to commit suicide, do I call someone or let it play out?
@Chiaroscuro1
This is when things get complicated - morals and ethics is quite subjective. The reality is 'right and wrong' doesn't exist - it's something we've made up. We all have a different sense of what's right, what's wrong and what we can or cannot do. Ultimately we need to look at the person's best interest. On one side forcing someone into treatment may prevent them temporarily from harm, but on the other hand we have the issue of rights. What gives us the right to decide who lives and who dies? What gives us the right to force someone to do something - you may argue that it is for their own good - but that doesn't change the fact that we are controlling someone else's life. Why do we uphold one set of morals but not another? These rules of society are very complex and it all comes down to what you believe is okay. In my opinion we should support someone - but let's not pretend that it's the "right thing to do" or the "Wrong thing to do" because there is no such thing as right or wrong. Don't add pretty words to cover up what you're doing. Put it plain and simply.
You want to die - I won't let you die. ----> I believe that I should have a say in whether or not you live, and how you live ---> I'm forcing you into something you do not want, but I believe the struggle of treatment that could help or break you is worth it.
Always break it down to the very basic meaning - if you not okay with that basic meaning, then you may need to rethink your actions.
You may want to help someone - but ultimately it is no one's place to play with the lives of others.
I'm not saying that we should leave them for dead, I'm just making a statement that's worth thinking about. Unfortunately we cannot simply throw out our usual rules, morals and ethics because society is founded on these basic principles. So for the time being, people will still force others into treatment, and this will have both negative and positive consequences depending on the situation. But I think it would be good if we could look at these actions more complexly or abstractly from time to time.
@MidniteAngel - Good answer. Thank you for taking the time to write about it. It's a difficult topic. I'll leave it at that.
Falling isn't funny. Not to me. Yet I've seen countless video clips of people or animals falling and it is portrayed as something that is funny. I always think about how much it must have hurt. What kinds of serious injuries the person might have sustained. Even in our own growth path I found a video clip of a cat jumping out of a window and then you just see him falling into space. And I wondered how far he fell and if he was hurt. I felt upset. I did not like it. I thought about addressing it in the suggestions box, but then I thought "will other people see this the way I do?"
