We have 'tricked' my parents' dog into dropping the ball when she returns with it, by simply introducing another ball! Usually they are identical in size/shape. and it works! She'll run back, drop the ball at the human-thrower's feet, and look up for the next throw! 
@cyanPlatypus6370 I find some dogs willingly will "hand" it over while others are like "throw it throw it throw it but you can't have it either!" Maybe they have evolved to learn past when people pretend to throw it to see what happens?
@Dawn04, yes that is possible. With my own canine, even when he was under age 1, he would follow and run out TO the ball, promptly go around the ball, and run back to me - all excited, of course. Maybe he thought it was a barrel? Like in barrel racing with horses (rodeo thing?) When he got older and inside the apartment, he'd play 'fetch' with me - with a ball, or a zebra, or no, I don't think we played fetch with his stuffed squirrel. Yup, *inside* our apartment. Just now he is certainly content with laying on a cotton blanket (sheet-like), resting/sleeping, with "his" fan pretty much blowing directly on him! xoxo to my SFO and the other SFOs out there too :) <3 Platy
