How to let go of the past

August 9th, 2017

My boyfriend and I have been through too much in too short of a time (3 years). We have a 6 month old son now and my main problem has been trying to let go of his past now that he's trying to change. For some reason I just can't seem to let the future be more important than something I cannot change...

Any suggestions?

@Tayshae

Hey Tayshae, I know it's been a year but I just wanted to check in and see how you are doing. A lot can change in a year, including our perspectives on things.

To comment on your original post, it can be difficult to let go of the past since the past often directly affects the future. It might be helpful to look at the past and the future as a road: You are driving toward a mountain in the distance and will eventually hit it if you keep going straight. If you change your trajectory to the right or left, there is an open field that is safe. By adjusting your path only slightly, you will still be going towards the mountain, but also going towards the open field. You will likely always be able to see the mountain in your peripherals since you can only ever go forward and not backward, but each decision you make can help you avoid the mountain.

Best of luck and I'd love to hear how you're doing
