Any tips on how to cope with nightmares??

User Profile: Tinywhisper11

I've been really struggling lately with very realistic nightmares. I wake up panicking, crying shaking. Each dream bringing unwanted memories to the surface. I'm trying to stay positive, and productive through the day, but then as night aproaches, I'm scared to go to sleep. I find myself very jumpy at slight noises throughout the day. It's just hard. Anyone know how to help/deal with nightmares??

@Tinywhisper11  It's got to be difficult to deal with realistic nightmares.  I hope things get better for you.  I appreciate your sense of humor and kindness in chat.

@Tinywhisper11

hi Lola, sorry I’ve been quiet, I’ve just been busy lately trying to get order back into my life.

How are you? 🌷

Im sorry you have nightmares, I’m not sure about how to cope with them. But I really like putting a few drops of lavendar essential in my candle holder with some water, and the aroma is really relaxing and lovely. It’s just a suggestion, worth trying I suppose… it is said that lavendar had relaxing properties…

I hope you’re okay ❤️

@Greentrees2325 lavender is my favourite scent, but I can't have scented candles cause it starts my asthma off, is lavender oil and water the same sort of thing???

I'm doing ok ❤❤ some order back in your life?? Is everything ok?

@Tinywhisper11 I put water with some lavender oil in a spray bottle and shake it before spraying it everywhere... on me, my pillow, around my room, on my stuffed animal, EVERYWHERE.

I’m okay thank you, just had relatives come and stay for a while and other family issues but things are better and back to normal now.

Sorry for the confusion, i meant an essential oil burner not a scented candle… I’d post a picture to show you what I mean but for some reason it doesn’t seem to work. Basically it’s a tea light candle holder and on the top you can put scented wax melts. But instead of that, you can simply fill the top with water and add a few drops of lavendar essential oil, the tea light candle underneath will heat the Lavendar oil / water mix and you’ll be able to smell the lovely Lavendar scent. I’m sure it won’t affect your asthma.

I hope that helps ❤️ ❤️

Thanks Lola ❤️ We’re all okay.

I hope it helps… but on second thoughts I’m not sure if burning a tea light candle will affect your asthma? If it’s a candle thing, then there are options of using an electric essential oil burner where you just plug it into the plug socket and fill the top with Lavender oil and water.

I'm so late but I struggle with the same thing. It's hard. And then I am just terrified to go to sleep. I try to fall asleep listening to music and hugging my teddy bear. Sometimes that helps. I wish I could help you more but I have no advice except for this as I'm going through the same thing.

@schrodingerscattt I find it helpful to keep a low light on all the time at night. When I go to sleep around 11:30 PM I tell myself that I'm just taking a short afternoon nap. Some part of my brain seem to respond as if it's actually true.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I cannot fall asleep where there is any light though. It bothers me a lot. For now  i find that only music helps.

@schrodingerscattt We have to find things that work for us. There's no one size fits all approach. Some people find the sound of a bubbling brook or ocean waves to be helpful. For you it's music.

@Amelia763 I fall asleep with the lights dimmed and a lava lamp on, but my carers do turn them off when I fall asleep🤔🤔 maybe I should ask them to leave them on for a while ❤ thankyou

@Tinywhisper11 Im so sorry to hear this I hope you find a way. It is hard to deal with things like this depending what caused the problem and also who the person dealing with these issues and who you have around whether people think its funny to trigger you or if there is real support. The biggest and only real thing I know that helps me is finding a person or pet I supose that will lay with you and not leave your side. Basicly something you can put your trust in, An ex of mine would sit at the edge of the bed and read untill I woke up so that the first thing I seen was something I knew that wasn't going to hurt me. This helped me but I don't have that now and am looking for ways to help myself.

don't antecipate the night stressing about the probability of nightmares.

if they happen, analyze them

u had something happened to u, that ur not facing

till u do, they'll keep happening

dive in, it will make sense under ur own analysis

@Tinywhisper11 This might seem odd, but drink some water before bed. My chemistry teacher explained that nightmares occur due to a chemical imbalance caused by lack of hydration. It always seemed like and old folk's tale to me, but when I remember to have a glass of water before bed, I sleep like a baby. On a more scientific note, a lot of studies have shown that cutting back on cigarettes/alcohol/coffee, regular exercise and avoiding heavy meals before bed can help with sleep quality. More about this topic: How to Prevent Nightmares (sleepfoundation.org) Hope this helps!

There’s a medicine called Prozasin that’s for PTSD and night terrors if your nightmares don’t go away on their own. I take 2mg every night and I’m mostly nightmare free.

I also use aromatherapy extensively. I have several different roll on scents that I have found help anxiety, mental focus, sleep, anxiety and even allergies! Live Love Oils Boutique on Etsy is my favorite. She makes the best blends!

I sincerely hope your nightmares go away on their own. I know how horrible it feels to be in such a real place and it doesn’t feel good. Hope this might help.
