Beautiful weather we're having
Morning Poem: Reflections on Language and Feeling
Original:
“A mí me encanta el olor a tierra mojada, pero el frío no.”
Direct Translation:
“I love the smell of wet dirt, but not the cold.”
Poetic Translation:
“The smell of humid earth brings me joy, the cold weather it’s packaged in, not so much.”
Reflection:
It’s a simple thought at first, loving the smell of wet earth after rain, yet disliking the chill that comes with it. But when I look closer, it feels like more than just a preference about weather.
There’s a truth here about how we experience life:
we often love the essence of something but resist the conditions that carry it.
We love the smell of renewal, but not the cold that delivers it.
We love honesty, but not the confrontation that comes with it.
We love connection, but not the vulnerability it requires.
We love growth, but not the discomfort of change.
And maybe that’s the lesson, that beauty and unease often arrive together, wrapped in the same moment. To reject one completely is to lose the other.
On Language and Translation:
When I first translated this line, I noticed something missing.
In Spanish, “A mí me encanta” feels intimate, it doesn’t just state love; it feels love.
In English, “I love” can sound flat in comparison.
So I rewrote it as:
“The smell of humid earth brings me joy.”
This version restores warmth and personal tone, like saying, this is how the world touches me.
It’s a small reminder of how words can shift meaning across languages, and even within ourselves. Sometimes we feel something clearly, but when we try to express it, the words fall short or translate imperfectly.
Yet maybe that, too, is part of the message:
what we can’t perfectly translate, we can still feel deeply.
A gentle meditation:
Let the next rain remind you that joy and discomfort often share the same space and that beauty doesn’t always arrive under perfect conditions.

I love the rain, listening to it against the window pane.
I find it soothing.
Autumn is my favourite time of the year.
Beautiful leaves colouring the ground.
Crisp, fresh air.
Darkness enveloping me.
Open fire.
